Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Gallo.
Tony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Tony Gallo Athletics started in January of 2018. A month before starting the company, I had been directing and coaching basketball skills and drills with another program for the past four years. Suddenly, Christmas time, I was let go. Although worried about how I would keep a roof over my family’s head, I knew this was the best thing that could have happened to me at the time!
TGA began workouts in January of 2018 at Salem Academy. I consider this the “Home” of TGA. Fast forward eight months, we are now hosting clinics in Salem, Marblehead, Malden, Newburyport, and North Reading!
I began training kids after coming home from playing professional basketball in Canada. Prior to Canada, I played in the Netherlands’ Top League. I played college ball at Coppin State University (D1) where I was the leading scorer on team and second in the conference.
Although I was creeping closer and closer to maybe putting myself in a situation to get a shot of my dream of the NBA, I had a one-year-old daughter at home. I decided that staying home raising my daughter was more important than chasing my dream. I gave it up and started turning my energy into training the future.
Has it been a smooth road?
As far as on the court, things have been awesome! The kids and the parents see a huge development in their kid’s skills. As far as off the court, like most starting businesses, finances were a struggle early. But as we grew and I became a little more knowledgeable on certain parts on the business end, things have been pretty smooth.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Tony Gallo Athletics story. Tell us more about the business.
Tony Gallo Athletics (TGA) strives for greatness on and off the basketball court. We believe in developing the habits of hard work, discipline, confidence, and leadership. All of these attributes are needed to become a great basketball player. If practiced regularly, these traits will translate to the way the kids conduct themselves in their community.
We specialize in large and small group workouts, 1-on-1 and semigroup workouts, as well as all day vacation clinics.
I am most proud of watching the kids develop as basketball players! I work with kids ages three up to guys that play professional ball. I want to get the maximum of out of every player I train!
What I believe separates myself and TGA is that I still practice what I preach and still do it at a high level. I was the leading scorer in the country in semi-pro league ABA (32ppg) in 2017/2018. I am obsessed with studying the game and being innovative within the drills I do in my workouts.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The most important thing for me is staying true to what I believe in. I started this program to give kids the opportunity to have a place to work towards their goal with knowledgeable coaches that have played/coached at that level. Never refusing a player due to finically situations at home. I would love to keep expanding my brand. I’m already in five towns in mass within eight months of starting TGA. My next goal is to find a warehouse or some area of space to create a facility of my own! This will allow me to maximize the gym usage and not have to put a time limit on the player’s workouts!
