Meet Todd Moore of Cuppacoffee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Moore.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Cuppacoffee was founded by Todd Moore who was born and grew up in Sydney Australia. The concept is to provide espresso-based coffee, Australian savory pies and pastries. I saw a gap in the Boston market in 2008 I was travelling back and forth to Australia from 2008 to 2010 and developed the concept and overlook of the stores and branding.

The art of making espresso based coffee was ripe in Boston with the likes of starbucks and dunkin donuts being the competition. MY belief is that Bostonians will start to crave well crafted espresso drinks, friendly service and to create a true coffee break. I have always thought that chains cannot compete with our quality or service.

The first store was One Merrimac st Boston this store was a 400sqft very visible location that look 3 year to see our opening day. This location was a billboard for my brand as it is one of the busiest corners in Boston and the gateway to the Westend. This location was an instant success opening in July 2013. This allowing me to look at a second location in the Southend and the area that was being developed over the next 3 years.

I opened this store in September 2015. The location is on the lower level of The Troy Boston building consisting of 378 apartments. Six months later we opened a pop up location at 699 Boylston st in Bostons back bay. We open 3 stores in 3 years which is very aggressive however we believe that Boston deserves a high end espresso bar that focuses on well crafted coffee.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is smooth, financing is always difficult due to the large start-up costs with construction costs and equipment. Licensing takes time to go through the city of Boston.

Marketing and Branding was something I had always done as I was a General Manager for Converse Footwear in Australia and New Zealand.

I think marketing and sales are very critical components of any business. After 5 years it is now smoothing out we have a strong regular base of customers and experienced staff. however obstacles and challenges always appear.

Cuppacoffee – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I try to lead by example. I an on the shift in one of my stores every morning. I start at 4.30am I go to all locations before 5.30am to ensure they are stocked and ready to go for the day.

Then I go to the store that I am opening bake pies, brew coffee and start social networking on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Cuppacoffee posts most days to show customers product and various other forms of content. Then once the first customer comes in we work solidly till midday serving customers and making sure we are a part of their morning ritual.

Cuppacoffee is known for our espresso based drinks and our Australian food treats. I am most proud of our growth, our staff and our quality. We truly create an experience for our customers. Customers are greeted when they come in the store and told when they leave we appreciate your business and know you have choices.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Seeing an idea come to life and seeing the appreciation from our customers.
