Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Sellenger.
Tim, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Red’s Rubbish Removal in 2012 in San Diego, CA. After I graduated from The University of New Hampshire in 2010 I moved out to San Diego where my sister was. My plan was to stay for 1 year (which turned into over 4 years) after about 2 years of 8-10 different jobs and not being happy wherever I ended up working, I decided it was time to make a change and start working for myself. I owned a pickup truck and I figured I should put it to use. I had done some junk removal in high school for my Dad who owned a construction business, so I thought that would help me make some extra money outside of my 9-5 job. I went out and bought a small 9 foot trailer to tow being my truck and I started walking around my neighborhood of Pacific Beach, CA handing out flyers and talking to everyone as well as advertising on craigslist and sure enough I started to get some business. At this time my 9-5 job was working at a window sales company and I would schedule my junk removal jobs before going to work, after work, missing a lot of lunches and working every weekend. It took about a year or so of me working my junk removal business part time with my 9-5 to finally pull the trigger, with a lot of encouragement from my parents, and go full time. Quitting my day job was one of the scariest, risky but most important, best decisions of my life. It finally let me concentrate full time on junk removal and really bring things to the next level.
I worked Red’s Rubbish Removal full time in San Diego for about 6 months growing the business every week. I decided to make the move back home to Boston where all my family and friends were, knowing that was where I wanted to live my life. The week I moved back I bought my first dump truck (The Red Rocket) and continued to advertise and work full time on Red’s Rubbish Removal never missing a beat. All of my experience from San Diego helped me quickly fall into place in Boston. I have been working Red’s Rubbish Removal in Boston since 2014 and have grown the business to 2 dump trucks and both part time and full time employees throughout the year. Red’s Rubbish Removal has no plans on stopping and we are continuing to grow every day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not always been smooth throughout. I remember 2 weeks after I went full time working for Red’s Rubbish, I got 1 call for junk removal for the entire week, which was for a couch removal job for my friend who I played softball with. I started to think I had made a mistake and wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to continue working for myself
One huge struggle is dealing with truck issues and keeping up with maintenance, After all, the business does not exist without the trucks.
Early on when I started I did all the work myself and couldn’t afford to pay anyone to help me. Not having help on some of the jobs I have done were a HUGE struggle. Getting leads is a daily struggle to this day and is always on my mind, figuring out what works and what does not work.
Red’s Rubbish Removal – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Red’s Rubbish Removal is a full service junk removal company. What that means is that we do all the work, all you have to do as a client is point at what you want gone and we haul it all away into the truck and off to donation, recycling or transfer station.
We specialize in junk removal which includes basement, garage and attic clean-outs. We will haul away any junk or trash you have outside or inside your residential home or commercial property. We haul away construction and demo debris removal as well and do light demo work, which includes small garage or shed removal.
Red’s rubbish is known for always breaking down our bulky items such as dressers, bureaus, and desks flat to make more room for our clients in our trucks. Our trucks are similar size to our competitors but we always fit more.
I am most proud of the reviews, texts messages and emails I get from our clients thanking us for the good service we have provided to them.
What sets Red’s Rubbish apart from others is that we are still a small business and have a local feel to us. Me as the owner still answers the phone to talk to all the clients and I am there to hand them my business card when we arrive to haul away their junk.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
If I can leave a client’s home or business and know that they had an awesome experience with the work my employees and I did, than that to me is success. It is very important to me to leave every home or business looking better than it did before we showed up. We may just be picking up junk but it is much more important to me; we need to be careful of the walls or the floors and always sweep up and wash any area that was filled with junk.
