Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Regan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My father, Tom, and I own and operate a small gym in South Boston called Regan’s Motivated Fitness. My father brought his life-long goal of owning his own gym to fruition in the spring of 2007, so we have been in business for 10 years! Most people thought my father was crazy for jumping into small business ownership in the height of one of the worst recessions our country has seen, but most people don’t know Big Tom Regan. Failure was not an option for him and his idea. He wanted to turn his love and passion of fitness into his life’s work, and that’s what he has done.
Before opening to doors to Regan’s Motivated Fitness (RMF), Tom was already well entrenched into the fitness industry. Though he had spent his previous 15 years working his way from doorman to General Manager at the popular Boston pub & restaurant, “Cheers,” Tom had always had a deep passion for fitness and wellness. He had taught many different fitness and martial arts classes on the side for years before finally taking the plunge into opening up his own shop.
Personally, I have been involved with the gym since the beginning. At first I was a part-time, nights, weekends and school vacations kind of employee where I would pick up some spin classes here and there, or help out with bootcamps. But since graduating from college in 2012 I have been here at RMF full time and find myself to be my father’s son more and more as the years have piled on. We are a dynamic father-son duo of Motivation, and we have no intentions of stopping that any time soon!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In running any small business of course there are obstacles; from finding the right employees to join our team, to making sure that the profit column stays higher than that loss column (hopefully). However, my father and I are extremely lucky in that we absolutely love what we do. Sure, problems come up with payroll, scheduling, bills etc., along the way, but those problems pale in comparison to some of the real world problems out there. For those real world problems out there, what better way to escape them or counteract them than with a great workout? We get to be a part of that escape! We get to help people change their lives for the better, and that puts any problems that may arise into perspective.
Please tell us about Regan’s Motivated Fitness.
Regan’s Motivated Fitness is a fully-functional fitness facility. We have a full weight room with free weights as well as nautilus and cable machines, treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, a step machine, a rowing machine and a full class schedule offering, yoga, spinning, boxing and our signature “Spin & Sculpt” classes weekly. “Spin & Sculpt” is a half spinning, half endurance-based lifting class where you get one heck of a full-body workout in the hour!
What we are perhaps most known for is our Bootcamps! Our bootcamps are AWESOME and we have a cult following to prove that for us. Pretty much anyone who tries out our bootcamps is hooked from day 1 and keep coming back for more. Our bootcamps are a great way for you to mix fun with fitness. The group dynamic makes working out a camaraderie-filled experience, in which each workout flies by! We do everything from weight lifting to core, and boxing to running. If you have found yourself in a workout rut, I guarantee this bootcamp will force you out of that rut and push you towards the best shape of your life!
We run our bootcamps in 4 week sessions with 4 sessions meeting per week. Typically we start on the first Monday of any given month, meet from Monday through Thursday mornings from 6-7 am. 4 weeks; 16 workouts; guaranteed results!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My father has been leading youth sports & conditioning camps for well over the last 15 years. Some of the very first camps that he ran were for my older brother and some of his close friends when they were around 14 or 15 year old athletes; this just meant that you had a 9 year old Thomas as the assistant to the director of these camps. Some of my fondest memories of childhood were growing up in this fitness culture created by my father. When these camps started gaining traction and started getting more popular, all the kids of the neighborhood coined us the term “Ripped by Regan.” There was absolutely no better way to spend your summer than starting every Monday through Thursday morning with a fantastically outrageous workout led by Big Tom Regan. Morning workouts, city day jobs and banging into work to hang out on the beach all day; those were the days!
