Meet Tenzin Arya of Arya Roofing in Winchester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenzin Arya.

Tenzin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am originally from India. I grew up in Italy and came to this country 15 years ago. I guess I was pursuing the “American Dream” but I had very little work experience and didn’t really know what I was looking for. I was just a young man trying to find my way. The one thing I had going for me was a strong drive to be successful, no matter what I did. I always wanted to do my best and learn whatever I could.

So I worked odd jobs and eventually was hired by a roofing company, which turned out to be a life-changing event – although I could hardly imagine it would be at the time. I started at the bottom, as a common laborer, but I took the job seriously and became very good at it.

After a few years, I turned into an experienced roofer and was promoted to foreman. I loved the job but, after a while, the learning curve flattened out. I wanted to enhance my skills so I decided to work for other companies in order to learn more about the roofing business. I did that for a couple of years.

Each company has its own procedures, policies and methods, and I was able to get a real education by taking different jobs. In some cases, the pay was lower but the learning experience was always valuable.

About 11 years ago, I decided to form my own roofing company, Arya Roofing. I didn’t really know how to run a business but I followed my instincts, received help from some good friends, and things have worked out really well.

Has it been a smooth road?
It was hard in the beginning. I knew how to install a roof properly but, in a highly competitive market, I had no experience in sales or hiring workers. Another challenge was the high rate turnover in the industry. It was difficult to train people and then have them leave.

After a while, I decided to focus on maintaining a consistent work crew. I put a lot of time into training them, paid a good wage and tried to meet their needs. This strategy really paid off. We now have a steady, dependable crew and this saves time in the long run and enables us to offer the best possible service.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Arya Roofing – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Arya Roofing serves the greater Boston area, specializing in all kinds of roofing, siding and custom gutters. We do residential and commercial projects. I think we’re different from other roofing companies because we take the time to learn the customer’s needs and establish a positive working relationship. It’s important to know the customer’s requirements, expectations, scheduling and other concerns. We’re not just trying to get in and get out, doing the job as quickly as possible. Our priority is doing the job right at a fair price.

It’s also essential that we’re well-versed about all the latest methods, equipment and materials. So I’m constantly taking courses, reading books and manuals, and going online to learn as much as I can about the roofing business. It’s an evolving industry that requires constant learning.

And I’ve never forgotten the great opportunity I’ve received here in America. I don’t ever take it for granted. So we try to give back to the community, doing charitable work for Habitat for Humanity and other organizations in need.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?

I am really glad that I wound up in Boston. This area is one which is very diverse and accepting, something that was very important to me when I arrived. It still is. Boston is a place with many different cultures and ethnic groups, which not only gives the city charm but also a feeling of hope and opportunity. Both my children were born here and I’m glad they’ll have the chance to grow up in this type of environment.

Ayra Roofing has maintained and replaced sections of my 1890 Victorian for the past 10 years. I just stumbled across this article about the owner. Over the years Tenzin always managed to correctly diagnose my roofing and related structural issues. His crew are really a bunch of great guys. Hard workers ever single one of them. No loud blaring radios, every evening the throuly clean up.
