Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted Reardon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our insurance agency was started by my Great Grandfather, Will Reardon in 1919. My father started working with his Grandfather when he was 8 under the name of Reardon & Reardon Insurance of all Kinds. After my Great Grandfather passed away my Grandmother operated the insurance agency while my Father was in the Navy during World War II. After my Father came back from the war he took over the insurance agency from my Grandmother and continued to build upon the foundation that my Great Grandfather and Grandmother started. My Father continued to operate the insurance agency and at the same time became a building contractor to help make ends meet for his family. After graduating from college I took a job in claims with a large insurance brokerage firm in Boston. After 4 years doing claims my Father asked me to come to work with him. He stressed, with him, not for him which he and I thought was significant since the intention was for me to purchase the agency from him in a specified time period. I purchased the agency from my Father in 1994 and hope to pass it along to one of my children.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business from scratch is always a struggle and requires lots of energy, time, persistence and work, lots of work. We have not been immune to growing pains and challenges either from new competitors in the marketplace, increased regulation or the seemingly endless adaptation and learning curves to new technology
Please tell us about Reardon Insurance Agency & Financial Services.
We are an independent insurance agency representing 5 major company groups. Being an independent agent allows us to create an insurance plan specific for each of our clients depending on their needs. Our specialties are personal insurance (auto, home, marine, recreational) and small commercial insurance. What I am most proud of is our reputation in the community as an agent that is caring, knowledgeable, responsive and honest. We have multi generations of client, some dating back to our inception as an insurance agency. What sets us apart is we listen first, then formulate a plan to address the individual insurance needs. Will Reardon’s motto still resonates here, “No question is a dumb question”
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honesty, nothing. I think everything happens for a reason and we are shaped by our success and failures. As long as we learn from our failures and keep humble by our successes they both make us who we are. My Father always said “keep the faith” and I firmly believe he was right.
