Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted and Maureen Nussdorfer.
The campground was built by Ted with his parents, Ted and Becky, in the early 1970’s, opening for campers in the summer of 1973. They retired ten years later, and Ted and Maureen have owned and operated it for the last 35 years.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Operating the campground has been overwhelmingly positive. On the personal side, missing out on summer activities that others take for granted, like celebrating the 4th of July, has been a little tough. But, we’ve made up for that in quality family vacations in the off-season. We feel very fortunate to be able to work together, and to have raised our three children at the campground. Not only did it allow us hands-on parenting, but it also gave our kids interactions with people from all walks of life. Additionally, they gained early work experience, and insight into what it takes to run a small business. If asked, we don’t think they’d change a thing.
On the business side, keeping up with the demands of technology is something we could never have foreseen. In 1973, all the campers needed was a patch of land and clean restrooms, maybe 20 amps of electricity, and a water spigot on the site. Today, cable TV and Wi-Fi at the campsites are a must, and the latter is a consistent challenge to provide. With more amenities being added to RVs all the time, 50 amps of electricity is on the verge of not being enough.
