Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted Galante.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started as a kid who knew how to draw really well, who also had a shop in his parent’s basement. Making things was part of everyday life. Design was a basic part of growing up and soon grew into a passion. I opened the studio in Harvard Square 20 years ago, with a focus on design, making, drawing, and testing ideas. Today we produce buildings, interiors, furniture, and objects of all scales for a wide range of clients.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What obstacles and challenges? One obstacle was being from New York and not having a network of people in Boston. This made for challenges while building the practice and finding clients early on. Overcoming them involved working extra hard to convince people of our design ability, and careful focus on project delivery. At each turn we used project compensation to build the practice further and further, buying equipment, making decisions about office direction, and creating opportunities for future projects.
The Galante Architecture Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What sets us apart from others is our ability to produce physical studies of various design ideas in digital models, scale models, and full-scale prototypes. We maintain a full production shop with digital and physical equipment allowing for real-time exploration of ideas. Ultimately architecture is made of materials that stand for decades. Our studio is able to produce material studies well before there is a need for a contractor to be involved, and thus allow everyone full understanding. We are design specialists in a diverse array of projects – art galleries, maker spaces, learning environments, and public safety facilities are some examples.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There are many proud and fulfilling moments of my career to date. One that stands out is being selected for the NYC Design and Construction Excellence program based on our portfolio of work. This program, started by the Bloomberg Administration, focused on identifying architects whose work surpasses that of everyday firms. We were delighted to be selected and remain very proud to this day.
