Meet Taylor Murphy of Taylor Murphy LMT in Hanover

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Murphy.

Taylor, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
To be honest, it all started with my daughter, August. She’s 8 now and she’s always been the biggest motivational piece in my life. I needed to be something she could look up to.

I was actually in college for Deaf studies for a couple of years. I kept switching minors, kept dreading class, kept feeling more and more disconnected with the major. Don’t get me wrong, I loved working with the Deaf community and learning ASL but I just couldn’t connect the way I wanted to.

I ended up dropping out of college, I’m pretty sure my mom just wanted to shake me haha. But I really needed to find something that complimented my life. And being a Deaf studies major made me realize that I did want to help people.

I found Massage Therapy in 2013. I thought to myself, LMT’s have the coolest jobs. They help people walk again, they help cancer patients, and they help people who have all kinds of different mental health issues. So many positive things came from one profession. I needed something like that in my life.

I started a 900 hour program. Fell in love with kinesiology and had more than one instructor tell me I was intuitive with my bodywork, and that’s what made a great therapist. I graduated, took my MBLEX exam and earned my licenses in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

I worked at various spas and wellness centers over the years. I always wanted my own business so I took the leap last November. It’s been an awesome ride. I’m proud of myself.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Totally not the smoothest road. I had a three year old, working two jobs and going to school. Still to this day I’m not even sure how I stayed awake most days.

Although grateful for the opportunities my former employers gave me, I was burnt out. At one point I was seeing eight clients a day, more focused on sales than healing and believing other therapists with bigger numbers were “better” than I was.

I ended up injuring my wrist/thumb. I couldn’t work for a whole month. I was getting injections and taking Advil every day. I couldn’t even do the dishes, I was in so much pain. That injury made me realize that I needed to set boundaries. So, when I healed I started seeing less clients, but I still felt defeated and burnt out. I even questioned if this was the right career for me.

It took some serious reflection to realize that, I was a great therapist to the right people. My style of bodywork was different, it wasn’t better or less than anyone else’s style. Overworking myself for sales just didn’t make sense to me anymore. So, I left the franchise world.

I started my practice last November and of course I was afraid. I was afraid I was going to fail, I was afraid no one would like my style of bodywork, I was afraid of leaving my 9-5 job for something that had no guarantee.

Every struggle that presented itself along the way was a learning experience that I needed to start my own practice. It all happened for a reason and I can finally see that now.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Taylor Murphy LMT – what should we know?
I specialize in Deep Chronic Pain Relief, Sports Therapy and CBD oil treatments. I work with anyone who experiences chronic pain and prefers an alternative to pharmaceuticals.

I help facilitate the body’s natural healing process with an intuitive strategy which sets me apart from other practitioners. Dysfunctional tissue and pain should never be present in anyone’s life. I work with each client to achieve their anatomical goals and make sure they leave each treatment with a solid self-care plan. I refer clients out to other alternative health practitioners when needed. I’m most proud of my personal goal which is to ensure each client is working towards a pain free life.

I also offer other modalities such as prenatal massage, cold stone therapy and hot stone therapy. All providing a variety of benefits.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mother and my sister, for being my village while I was a single mother. When I worked long days and went to school at night. I couldn’t have done it without them.

Colby Kaiser. My biggest support system. He pushed my career in every positive direction. He always made sure I believed I would succeed, even with all my doubts and fears. Every small milestone and every good day at the office, he was there.

Bethany Powers. For appreciating my bodywork and giving me the opportunity to start my own practice.

Every client who I’ve had the pleasure to work with. Thank you for appreciating my work and trusting your healing process. I would not be here without you.
