Today we’d like to introduce you to Tava Sternberg.
Tava, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After college I moved to Boston, I knew I wanted to go back to school but was unsure what I wanted to study. I found myself always giving friends tips of what to eat, what workout class to try or what supplement they could benefit from. I knew my passion was in the health industry and after doing research on programs, realized that going back to school to become a registered dietitian would be a perfect fit. Unfortunately, I lost both my parents to cancer at a young age, which probably makes me value my health even more than the average person. We can’t do much about our genetics, but we can control what we put into our bodies and how we take care of ourselves. My vision was to always start a private practice once I finished my dietetic internship. I wanted to help people live healthier lives and be happy and confident with their food choices. While studying for the RD exam, my partner Lesley and I started the Hub Healthy Instagram account (@hubhealthyboston) – which, for me, was just a place we could share with our community healthy tips and how to live a healthy life. We started getting inquires on social media and I realized that my dream of starting a private practice could easily become reality with some hard work and devotion. I now see clients all over Boston and offer a variety of services from nutrition counseling and corporate wellness to grocery store tours and kitchen makeovers.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I had to teach myself a lot about business, web design, marketing, bookkeeping, and everything in between about owning my own business. It has all been a learning experience and my services and style has definitely evolved over time and probably will continue to change, but always for the better. However, its fun owning your own company and every hiccup is a learning experience that ultimately makes me a better business owner.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hub Healthy – what should we know?
Hub Healthy helps individuals and companies become the healthiest version of themselves! I’m a registered dietitian, which means I know a lot about food and the science behind good nutrition – I work with clients on a variety of different topics, including weight loss, healthier lifestyle, gastro intestinal (GI) issues, and disease prevention. When meeting with clients I really get to know their eating habits and lifestyles – this helps me customize a plan and create attainable goals with them. Everyone has different food preferences and there is no one-size-fits-all meal plan – you don’t walk out of my sessions with a list of foods you have to eat and others you have to avoid. Instead, I give you the tools and education you need to make healthier choices while still enjoying the foods you like. We work together on making progress towards your goals and I provide a ton of support along the way.
When working with companies for corporate wellness, Hub Healthy focuses on helping the entire company become healthier, starting with its employees. We offer nutrition counseling sessions with each employee to identify his or her health goals and needs. From there, we come up with a plan for the company as a whole – we identify health challenges and offer cafeteria/kitchen makeovers to create an environment that will support the employees in reaching their health goals.
I think what really sets Hub Healthy apart is that we are fun and exciting and we really cater to our clients. We want to see our clients succeed and if that means having a session in their kitchen while we cook something healthy together, then that’s what we will do. We also aren’t traditional in the sense of having an “office” – we see our clients in convenient locations for them: their home, office or local coffee shop. Going to see a dietitian is one thing, but having your own personal dietitian who will coach you through your journey of becoming healthier and cater to your needs is much more engaging.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My partner Lesley Levitt definitely deserves a shootout! She is now full time at Boston Medical Center but helps with me corporate events and workshops. We started Hub Healthy together and although she always gravitated towards clinical work, she helped Hub Healthy get to where it is today.
