Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Stuberg.
Sydney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I first started getting into yoga in high school simply as an after school activity. I had recently injured my knee quite badly and had to stop doing exercise such as running, which was when I turned to yoga. I quickly realized that yoga went far beyond the physical practice. Yoga was able to help not only keep in shape and healthy, but it really had great mental benefits as well. At that point, I was hooked. I did a few challenges on my own, tried out a few studios and finally found a studio I liked and became a regular. I knew yoga was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I made the decision to do the yoga teacher training.
Since then, I have created my own client base, website, blog, podcast, and instagram page that has almost 30K followers. What really sets what I do apart from others in the industry, is that I make an effort to keep my posts of the highest quality and I write my captions from my heart. Although you won’t see tutorials or challenges often on my page, I write about what I feel is relevant and try to establish a connection with my followers rather than play a numbers game.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting started in the yoga industry was rather difficult. After my teacher training, I still felt I had so much to learn. I didn’t really feel confident leading a group of individuals on my own and I wanted to learn more. So, I turned to books, I started practicing yoga myself more and I practiced teaching on family members and friends and volunteered to teach at the university I was attending at the time. Tapping into the industry was really the hardest part. Now, the problem I am faced with is finding the balance between my own practice and my teaching. As a teacher, the more you practice yourself, the better you can become. But when you are consumed by teaching, it is difficult to make it a priority at times.
Yoga with Syd – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I teach yoga multiple times a week and I teach both Vinyasa yoga and SPA Yoga. I would say I am best known for my photos and captions on Instagram – @yogawithsyd. I take pride in the quality of my account and don’t just post to post. I write about all things yoga and my ultimate goal is to connect with my readers and let them understand they are not alone. As humans, we all share the same basic needs and desires. I want to help people understand that we are not so different from others. We are actually made of the same substance and want the same end goals for the most part. Hearing that people have been helped by my words and the community I have built is really what keeps me going.
I have quite a lot of plans for the future of my business, but they haven’t quite rolled out yet. I know those ideas will be the main factor in what sets me apart from others in the industry.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I would say, success is having the freedom to do what you want, when you want. Most people in this world are tied to the 9-5 schedule. Most people work throughout their youth, striving to save enough for retirement, but they forget to live while they are young. Someone who is successful has the ability to take time for themselves and don’t need to work nonstop.
