Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Tyer.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Copley is one of the last, if not the last, locally owned and operated Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) in Massachusetts. Most SNFs are owned by large corporations based outside of MA. As a locally owned and operated facility located in the community where we live, we care for many of our friends, neighbors, and guests who we have associated with at various levels through their lives. Because we are local and know so many of the folks that choose Copley, there is less anxiety admitting a loved one into a post-acute setting. We have a very experienced, professional staff, who all have a personal interest in getting a guest back to their home successfully and as quickly as possible, or having a new resident adjust to living here and overcoming stereotypical views of a nursing home. It is easier to form a relationship when we already have one as a neighbor, classmate or through other community interests. Other SNFs just cannot offer that.
Has it been a smooth road?
It is a constant struggle achieving our goals when every revenue source wants to cut our funding. Anyone can simply cut costs and blame it on the state or federal government. Again, we have such a small market area and high demand that we can balance all of these outside interests and make our business successful.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Two thirds of our facility is for residents who consider Copley their home; it is commonly referred to as long-term care. These folks stay here because they need medical assistance 24 hours a day and cannot live at home alone. Our job is to make it as home-y and comfortable as possible for them. The remaining third of our guests need rehabilitation for an acute medical condition following a hospital stay. Our guests stay on average 14-17 days until they are well enough to return to their home. During their stay at Copley, they will have intense therapy (physical, occupational and speech) as well as monitor all of their individual clinical needs. Copley has a reputation for excellent orthopedic rehab following elective joint replacement and also procedures to repair acute injuries such as fractures due to falls. Our entire rehabilitation team is in-house, as are all of the services we provide. This again, speaks to the advantage of a locally owned and operated facility. We are able to offer and manage the highest level of care.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Stoughton is a great town. It is centrally located just south of Boston and easily accessible from Canton, Milton, Randolph, Sharon, and Brockton, among others. I was raised here and my father was a practicing MD in town for 40 years which makes it the perfect location for what we’re trying to achieve here at Copley.
