Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Ferullo.
Steve, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Both of my parents were involved with retail over the counter (OTC) sales. My father was with Gillette for over 25 years and my mother was a representative for Johnson & Johnson, so the writing on the wall was I’d end up a salesman.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m sure there are few sales people that would term what we do to be a smooth road. The one constant in this industry is change; retailers go out of business and/or merge with other retailers. Buyers come and go making relationship building an on-going process. Competitive pressures on both sides always make for an interesting day.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the First Check Diagnostics story. Tell us more about the business.
First Check Diagnostics is headquartered in Waltham, MA; and is the market leader for OTC home drug testing kits. All First Check products are over 99% accurate and provide results within minutes in the privacy of your home. Additionally, all kits include a free mail away lab confirmation – so you can be confident in the results of the test. We offer 5 different kit configurations including: Marijuana, Marijuana and Cocaine, 4 Drug, 7 Drug, and 12 Drug tests that checks for the top 7 most commonly-abused illicit (or street) drugs and 5 of the most commonly-abused prescription drugs.
I’m extremely proud of our relationship with non-profit notMYkid (www.notmykid.org), as this year marks our 13th year sponsoring and supporting this organization. A national drug prevention program, notMYkid is aimed at parents of middle school students; their goal is to educate parents about current drug trends and arm them with knowledge to help protect their children; while preparing kids to face everyday challenges with courage and confidence. The company also introduced the concept of home drug testing as a prevention tool for parents to allow kids to say no – “I can’t try that, my parents drug test me…”
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck, but I do believe that hard work and perseverance will lead to success.
