Meet Stephen Serio of Aston Martin of New England, Lotus Motorsports, and Bond Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Serio.

Stephen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started the business in November of 1987 as primarily an export business sending old Aston Martins back to England. I acquired Lotus as a franchise in 1991 and Aston Martin in 1996. We moved to Waltham in June 2004 from Brighton and before that my show room was in the Back Bay on Stuart Street and before that I was outside of Central Square in Cambridge. My job has always been gathering, acquiring and selling vintage sports cars with a focus on Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes Benz and very rare and unusual unrepeatable type cars.

Has it been a smooth road?
It was tough after the September 2008 market crash but we recovered from that and forged ahead. There are also many peaks and valleys in the car markets but we remain flexible enough to offer many types of cars to get past this.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Aston Martin of New England / Lotus Motorsports / Bond Group story. Tell us more about the business.
We are one of the few places in the USA, certainly in the Northeast where you will find brand new cars next to classic and vintage automobiles. We also have a service department that can service, repair and restore just about any car that comes through here which is quite rare. We are a destination shop that is known throughout the world.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Impossible to guess really. There is a lot of competition that didn’t exist years ago and that makes for a very interesting algorithm. I hope the younger generation of iPhone/gadget possessive people care about cool transportation in the coming years.

Our vintage cars have truly become an asset class so it will be very interesting to see how that plays out like any market. What will become hot, cool off or just stay flat. Cars used to be just fun old things to covet and be proud of, now they’re a serious investment choice as well as great fun transportation.
