Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Driscoll.
Stephen Driscoll, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
SFC started out as Gold’s Gym in the late 1980s, expanded its facilities to 20,000+++ sq. ft. in the early 2000s and reorganized as Salem Fitness Center in the mid-2000s as an independent health/fitness club serving Salem-Beverly-Marblehead, Peabody, and Lynn.
SFC features a separate, exclusive women-only exercise/workout studio as well as co-ed facilities, including Group Ex studio for hosting 40+ classes weekly. Both the men’s and women’s sauna, steam and locker rooms have been renovated recently. SFC also hosts Parkinson Fitness classes twice weekly.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest challenge is scheduling the various popular Group EX classes…to accommodate the members’ early morning, late afternoon, early evening, and weekend preferences.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Salem Fitness Center story. Tell us more about the business.
SFC is not a mega-gym…SFC’s goal is to provide an attractive, well-equipped facility staffed by knowledgeable personnel, Group Ex instructors, and personal trainers. Open from 5 AM to 10 PM daily, with convenient weekend hours, SFC is an affordable, inclusive facility.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
As new trends are introduced in the cardio-equipment industry, all health clubs will be focusing on incorporating these while also maintaining a comfortable inventory of traditional facilities. Unfortunately, in recent years some equipment manufacturers have gone out of business, making spare parts availability a challenge for routine maintenance of client members’ favorites.
