Meet Stephen B. Moss PhD of The Moss Group in Bedford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen B. Moss PhD.

Dr. Moss, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My mother was a social worker; my sister died in the world of heroin; and I became a psychologist. This is probably not a coincidence. Long in the field in many capacities, I decided to create my own group practice to bring the best of what I had learned to my regional community.

Our mission goals:
1. Build a comprehensive, evidence-based range of mental health, addiction treatment, and psychiatric treatment services
2. Maintain a warm, comfortable and inviting waiting room environment for our clients
3. Nurture collaborative relationships with primary care physicians, school counselors, and other relevant providers
4. Educate the public about the crucial need to both identify and treat mental health and addiction problems

These four missions are all designed to help you “Become Your Healthiest Self.” I can say without reservation that we have the professional joy of seeing this occur day in and day out; it is truly what makes our business worth doing.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been both a joyous and challenging road. On the joyous side, we see hundreds and hundreds of adults and children “become their healthiest self” with a combination of counseling and/or psychiatry. Our services are highest quality, and comprehensive in scope. On the challenging side, I remember my father’s words: “the road to hell is lined with good intentions.” Although my intentions have been noble, I have not been the fastest learner on how to run this particular business: have made my share of business, payroll and personnel mistakes, and not moved as rapidly as desired to the “state of the art” practice I aspired to. But I can say we have come a long way, and the road to achieving that status is within sight.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Moss Group – what should we know?

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have to give credit to Diane Harris, my office manager, who followed me from a secure job to start this business from the ground up. She was and is an indispensable person in our practice, both as a manager and as one providing a warm supportive interface with most of our clients. I also would add Ronald Norris MD, our highly skilled adult psychiatrist. He provides excellent psychiatric services to our clients, a wealth of professional maturity and knowledge for our staff, and expert business consultation to me.
