Meet Stephanie Theisen of Crosscut Sewing Co. in Melrose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Theisen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Stephanie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My background is in marketing and web design but when I was expecting my second daughter, I decided to learn to sew. I was hooked from the first stitch! I was working from home as a graphic designer and started an Etsy business on the side selling handmade items. Eventually, I started selling fabric as well. I love teaching others to sew and I started releasing patterns and tutorials on my website and teaching at local shops. Last year, I decided to pursue this business full time and open a brick and mortar location so I could set up my own classroom and expand the fabric I offered.

I have been very encouraged by the response, especially from kids! My goal is to make it easy to learn to sew. For most classes, students can just show up. We have all of the machines, tools and materials needed for classes. People can learn to sew without making a costly investment in supplies.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest obstacle has been transitioning from the flexibility of working from home to the demands of a retail shop. I manage the shop and inventory, fill online orders, help customers, buy new inventory, and schedule and teach classes. It can be a lot to juggle and balance work with my family life.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
