Meet Jess Schwartz of Stanton Schwartz Design in Seaport

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Schwartz.

Jess, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Both Ryan and I have always had a huge appreciation for design and I personally have worked in the field for over 15 years. I started my career in the world fine jewelry where I learned the appreciation of craftsmanship, quality, and above all, deciphering clients wants and needs. After almost 10 years, I went back to school and received my Masters in Interior Architecture after I realized that I could utilize everything I loved about design and make it a more intimate journey for both myself and those who would live in the space. After graduating, I worked for a wonderful local architecture firm called Bergmeyer where I not only learned the ropes of the business, but what made a project successful. After a couple of years in commercial design, I knew it was time to make the conversation a little more personal – and make the transition into residential.

Ryan brought his business background with him into this business as well as a love for history, art, and design. He graduated with a major in entrepreneurship and built a successful career in Business Development in Boston before taking the leap into his passion – Interior Design. With him comes an unparalleled talent to seek out the beautiful, as well as the ability to bring a fresh perspective to almost every situation.

In 2014, knowing that we had a similar aesthetic to each other and the confidence that we could add a different perspective to the Boston Interior Design Community, we took a chance. It was a leap of faith for sure, but we started slow, and we worked our asses off! 4 Years later, our projects and our clients are only getting better.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Every business has its hiccups and I am not going to pretend that we have it all figured out. I will say though, that in order to survive, you have to learn quickly and be willing to change. Because of that, we have gotten better every year in regards to all aspects of business including best practices, resources, and trouble shooting. As in many industries, we are in the business of problem solving; and it’s our job to come up with the most beautiful solution.

We know that good design is well-considered, and a well-run business is no different. Understanding that every decision has an aftereffect allows you to be astute in how you proceed. This is as important in the design aspect of what we do as it is in making sure we are being responsible as small business owners.

We now have such a wonderful team that we are proud to bring into clients homes. Over the years, we have found some of the most talented people in Boston to collaborate with in the effort to bring the highest quality service and in many cases, custom product to our clients’ home – something we are very proud of.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Stanton Schwartz Design – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Stanton Schwartz Design is a residential interior design firm operating out of Boston’s Seaport neighborhood. We pride ourselves on client collaboration and careful consideration that result in spaces that are as beautiful as they are functional. With an eye for modern design but a stronghold in classicism, we strive to create spaces that will stand the test of time while still offering something a little more interesting.

We would like to think that our design principal is what we are known for, but we also hope that the fact that our clients become family in this process and that we are strongly invested in every decision that they make, is also part of our success. We feel strongly that this is a collaborative effort, and that when you hire us, you know you are getting an advocate throughout the process.

While this might be what sets us apart, it’s also that with Stanton Schwartz Design, you get two of us. Many firms only have one partner. I’d like to think our clients appreciate the back and forth between us and know that we each offer a valuable point of view. We don’t always agree, but we both have the client’s best interest at heart. And since our clients have the final say, we essentially present them with two amazing concepts where there is no wrong decision.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Expansion! We have spent much of the last year streamlining our processes behind the scenes, which has already made our day-to-day so much smoother. This year, as we focus on expansion, we could not be more excited to watch our business grow. We know that there is an immense amount of talent to bring in-house and have already started to do so, which allows us to stay a small business mentality while achieving greater outreach.

When it’s your own business, you have a hand in every single decision that affects the success and completion of a project. Being able to present an idea, and then having full autonomy over executing the vision opens so many possibilities. It’s the reason why making the leap was so important. It’s also the reason why we will continue making the leap – into different areas of business and continuing to take on new projects. Knowing that as we grow, it is of utmost important to do it in a way that still hold our ideals close, we could not be more ready to allow the business to evolve.
