Meet Sophie Amos of Boston Fetch in Jamaica Plain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Amos.

Sophie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Three years ago I was working in an office and spending my days answering emails. I needed a change. We had adopted our dog Smith a year before and so I decided that with his help, I would start my own dog walking business. I had already met a group of other dog owners at our local park and asked them to spread the word. 3 years later, there are now 10 of us walking, including my husband Derrick. We went high-tech with an app last year and are looking forward to expanding into Rozzie next year.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Shortly after setting up the business I got pregnant. It was a bit of a surprise but a very happy one. All the walking kept me very healthy, right up until I went into labor. My husband took paternity leave and looked after the business for a month. It turned out to be a great, not just for us, but for Boston Fetch too. Derrick enjoyed it so much that he quit his job and came to join the now family business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Boston Fetch – what should we know?
We are a very customer oriented business and take pride in giving great customer service, both K9 and human. We are an on foot service and only take a max of 3 dogs at a time. This means we have the time and ability to give them the attention and love they need. We are also very high tech, using an online system for scheduling and payment. This makes things easy for our human customers and the app sends maps of the walks and most importantly pics of the pups. I think this is what our human customers enjoy the most.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We have a cracking team! MJ, Zoe, Hannah, Maggie, Eddie, Bob, Abby and Maria. They are all great at what they do and most importantly love it as much as we do. Zoe has recently graduated from the Victoria Stillwell academy for Dog Training and is in the process of setting up her own dog training business. She has worked so hard, and is our oracle of dog information. Also a big shout out to Smith, our dog. He is the head of our social media and the whole reason we got started!
