Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonja Gjokaj.
Sonja, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born in Rome and raised in Germany, I most likely inherited my creativity and skill from my father, Gjelosh Gjokaj, who was an established artist in Europe. After studying art in Germany I moved to the U.S. and started freelancing as an illustrator. I very quickly realized that I had to combine my passion for people with my talent.
I absolutely love what I do. I’ve met some tremendous people through my work ranging from Nobel-prize winners to charismatic celebrity chefs and I’m looking forward to continuously grow as female business owner and artist.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I remember times when I didn’t have a car and basically had to haul my giant makeup case all over town in taxi cabs (no UBER yet!). I also had to put ice packs with my makeup to make sure my product wouldn’t melt on a hot and humid August day. A lot has changed since then! Phew!
Sonja Gjokaj Makeup – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a freelance makeup artist and I have worked on a large number of media and production assignments over the past 15 years. I’ve also done makeup on over 300 weddings and pride myself in really getting the look that my client wants.
My proudest moment was probably when travelled to London for a PBS/Masterpiece Theater assignment. I got to work with Damian Lewis (Homeland) and Gina McKee (Notting Hill, Atonement) for some interviews. I’ve also had the honor of meeting most celebrity chefs because of my work with WGBH’s lifestyle department (Ted Allen-Chopped and Tom Colichio-Top chef!!)
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I feel accomplished when I can contribute creatively to my assignments. I want my clients to feel amazing when they leave the green room/makeup chair.
