Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofi Madison.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sofi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I opened the shop 5 years ago. In the beginning it was all about sourcing small-batch products and highlighting our makers. The goal was to shift the way people looked at retail. We wanted to highlight quality over quantity, and by sourcing well made products that are made using high quality ingredients, we were curating a collection of items that would last, and have meaning to them. Over the years we’ve expanded our focus outside of our own shop and our personal agenda, and have focused our attention of the entire small business community here in the South End and Boston. It’s not just what we’re doing, it’s the power that comes when an entire city embraces independently owned establishments. This is the true spirit of Boston.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a smooth road because we’ve grown organically. We have a small space, we only order what we need, and therefor we’re able to manage our risks a bit.
That being said, we struggle daily with how to improve all across the board: managing an online shop and a brick & mortar, marketing, running our corporate gifting program, time management, etc. We’ll always have those challenges, but it’s been a humbling learning experience that’s been a necessary part of human growth.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Olives & Grace – what should we know?
All of the products at Olives & Grace are made by entrepreneurs. There’s a spirit in the shop that’s very intentional. We’re telling the story of “Do what you love, master your craft, offer a product that is better than the mass produced crap out there, and live a life of integrity.” Our products range from small-batch chocolate, to handcrafted jewelry. We host weekly pop-ups, inviting makers to take stage and talk about how they go started, what it takes to run their business, and essentially how their products bring value. Connecting our makers to our customers is the most rewarding part of the job. It’s with sincerity and excitement, rather than a salesy approach. We’re all about connecting people and connecting ideas. This really comes to light through our Corporate Gifting Program, where we introduce our clients to small businesses through our gift boxes that they otherwise wouldn’t have known about. This is a great growth opportunity for both the companies who are gifting to their VIP’s, and to our makers who are now fulfilling large orders for our shop.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Credibility and gratitude.
