Meet Sheryl Burns of Tangled Roots Herbal in Nashua

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheryl Burns.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sheryl. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my herbal studies in 2009. At the time I was unsure of exactly what I wanted to do with it but I knew I had a passion for plants and their ability to heal us. I continued to take courses over the years with many well-known herbalists. Before studying herbs I had 14 years’ experience in Marketing, Sales and Business Management. I knew I wanted out of the corporate rat race. In 2015, I was working at Whole Foods in the Whole Body department in Nashua, NH. I was taking a break from the corporate world and loving the opportunity to work in the field of herbs, nutrition and overall health! I realized many customers were asking for loose herbs, white sage, spiritual gift items and other things we didn’t carry. It occurred to me that there was a demand. It wasn’t until the summer of 2016 that the idea to open a store came to me in a meditation. It was very clear, this was what spirit was asking me to do. Within, 2 months we had found a location, renovated, built a web site, starting ordering products and opened in August 2016! Everything happened so quickly and easily! I guess that is exactly what happens when you are on the right path of Spirit. In February of 2017 we moved next store to a location 3 times the size of our original space and 2 months later we built another space downstairs where we offer Healing’s, Reiki Massage and other bodywork services, certification programs (Herbal & Reiki) and workshops. We continue to grow with each month. We are so blessed in this community! Every day, our customers continue to help us grow and heal on a personal level. It really is a beautiful experience and we are loving every moment of it! We feel so lucky to have the opportunity to share a mind, body, spirit experience with the community.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Owning your own business is a lot of hard work! But, you know you are on the right path when things seem to flow smoothly and opportunities just fall into your lap. That is pretty much how things have gone for us. There was a small moment when we applied for our loan the bank didn’t want to lend us money, but we continued to march forward with a trust that Tangled Roots Herbal was meant to be and it was. We knew it would be hard to explain our type of business to a lender but we weren’t backing down. It felt great to expand twice in our first year, and then again this year by adding a Yarn Shop in our back room without needing to borrow another penny. We don’t do this for the money, and we won’t be millionaires but the experiences we have every day at the store are worth more than any amount of money could buy. I am a big believer in the idea we manifest our own destiny, this could not be more true for my husband and I with Tangled Roots Herbal. Do what you love and believe in and it is amazing what can happen!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Tangled Roots Herbal story. Tell us more about the business.

We are most proud of the fact that we are a place where people can come together as a community and heal one another. A place of learning and a place to meet others who are going through similar situations or who have a similar belief system but feel they are all alone. Being a part of downtown Nashua has been a wonderful experience. Businesses have the same goal of working together to support one another. We have met so many wonderful people in our community!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think Spirit has played the biggest role in our success! There was a need in the community and we listened to the message and took action. We have been fortunate and grateful to have been featured by the local paper several times, a local magazine, we have had some radio interviews, tv interviews and we have been fortunate our shop was well received and word of mouth has been a big part of our growth. Without word of mouth I am not sure the newspaper, magazine, TV, or radio would have found us. I am not sure I believe in good and bad luck. Life is what we manifest. This is our journey, we are exactly where we are supposed to be.
