Meet Sharon Sheppard of Star Salon and Style

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Sheppard.

Sharon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I took cosmetology in high school my junior and senior year. My grades weren’t the best in high school and my junior year l transferred to Somerville high from Matignon. That’s where it all began for me. Cosmo was the best thing that l decided to do.

At 16 years old l was an assistant in a salon on Newbury Street in Boston (because that is where I was told I would make the most money and be successful… boy was that so wrong. When I was 18 I passed my borders and began my career as a hairstylist in Bedford.

Even as young as I was l knew someday I wanted my own salon. I took some business class at Middlesex community college (to please my mother) but seeing the money l was making part-time I decided l wanted to work full time and drop out of school.

Well here we are almost 18 years later and I just had my 4 year anniversary in January for my own salon.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I mean everything has a few bumps in the road. But l have to say I have been very lucky and very fortunate to have such a great team.

Star Salon and Style – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a hairstylist. I don’t believe in specializing in just one thing. I absolutely LOVE what l do, so to pick a specific thing I love is impossible.

If I give an awesome haircut l want them to have a fabulous color, whether it be highlights, single-process color, balayage or etc. my job doesn’t feel like a job to me.

I get to be creative and make people feel beautiful. I know my job was done right when people leave smiling and telling me how good l make them feel.

I am most proud of my growing business. I started in a very small space with only 2 active stations. After 2.5 years I was able to expand and double in size with 6 styling chairs and an aesthetician.

What sets me apart from others is what you see is what you get. I am a very honest person and tell it like it is. Business is business and my personal is my personal. Lots of people can’t separate the two and that makes for a disaster.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Never give up on what you want. Always set goals for yourself and know you are able to achieve anything you want if you work your ass off. I’ve always been a goal setter. And so far all my goals have been met.
