Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Alonso Gonzalez.
Sergio, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was in high school, I always wanted to get into photography! However, I didn’t want to burden my parents with the cost of a DSLR and equipment.
So I took electronic imaging and graphic design classes instead, to learn how to edit images. It was exciting, and I had some inspirational teachers. Fast forward to college, in pursuit of my Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (at UMass Lowell)… I sort of fell off the artistic grid for a large period of time…. my sister was attending MassArt and getting into a lot of cool macro photography…. which rekindled my yearning to get into photography.
After I graduated and entered the workforce, I was finally able to purchase an okay DSLR. My first DSLR was a Canon T4i with an 18-55mm kit lens. I took it everywhere and captured loads of photos that will never see the light of day. I say this because it took time to nail down proper composition and exposure. I decided I may want to pursue a profession in photography at some point, but didn’t feel the time was right. I worked with a local photo booth company for a year, which was a bit soul-crushing…
After a couple of years of practicing, reading loads of professional books, editing tutorials, and making countless mistakes… I decided to get rid of all my Canon equipment and go to a full frame Nikon system. It took a couple of months to get all of my gear situated. I started shooting portraits with friends and obsessing over edits in Lightroom/Photoshop. I met and began to date the woman that’d be my catalyst to all of this, Jessica.
Jessica really inspired me to wear my confidence and pursue my passion as a portrait photographer. She convinced me that I was going to make something of myself in this industry. So I kept practicing and met loads of great people along the way. I got contacted by clients via word of mouth, Instagram, and even Craigslist. Eventually, I began to focus primarily on couples. I enjoyed working in a diverse community with many couples and easing them into romantic photography.
The photography business has been a great learning experience and each year has truly been a blessing. Last year I shot about 15 weddings. This year I’m booked for about 18. It’s not all about the numbers though, but mostly the journey…. the successes and failures near and far in between.
I’m just getting started in this industry and I have no plans of slowing down. My three goals are simple:
1. Be happy
2. Make others happy
3. Inspire others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The Boston Wedding Photography field is certainly competitive. It takes a while to build a decent portfolio and good relationships within the community. I haven’t had any significant struggles along the way, but it also hasn’t been simple getting into the swing of things. Learning the business side, while maintaining the artistic component is certainly the biggest challenge. Learning to balance the two has been the most difficult.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sergio Alonso Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
My photography business specializes in portraits, more specifically engagement and wedding photography. I’m starting to get into more family portraits as well. What makes me proud, is how I am able to work with so many awesome individuals in the community. I get to be a part of people’s major life events and add a little something extra on their special day. What sets me apart from the competition is my team and attention to detail.
My team and I collaborate on the best shooting and editing methods. We work well with our clients and always put them at ease when behind the camera. I like to relate to my subject, get to know them, and approach the shoot accordingly. I’ve learned how to get my subjects to “come out of their shell”, for the best photos possible.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t say there has been much luck in any of this. I’d more so lean toward the hard work required, as well as the consistency and time commitment. Skill and experience aren’t learned overnight. It takes time and patience.
