Today we’d like to introduce you to Seema Kapoor.
Seema, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am from India which is a hub of colorful fabric & embroidery varieties. I have always been passionate about embroideries and fabrics. After finishing my bachelorette in Arts, I took 3 yrs. of designing training in School of Fashion Design, Boston. I followed my passion for fashion! I started my business in 1990. We were the first Indian home-based boutique in Boston. The community is very small but business is good. I enjoyed meeting thousands of people past 27 years. Over the years, I have designed many glamorous ensembles using traditional colors, craftsmanship, textures, and embroideries for the bride & groom. The rise in the interracial marriages gives us the challenge to mix up Indian fashion and come up with fresh elements and styles for the outfits
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our community is very small as a percentage of New England population. It has been an adventure, the most challenging thing for me has been to make people realize the difference between the store bought mass production quality and a boutique collection, where each piece is customized for them. Once our clients realize the difference they become our loyal customers.
Please tell us about Choonri Collection.
I have been inspired by Mughal Era Indian craftsmanship and regional handicrafts workmanship from rural India. We focus on mostly hand embroideries and hand-woven fabrics. I love my work because our quality of craftsmanship represents different parts of Indian craftsmanship. Every collection is distinct in design and detailing of the outfits. It takes months to conceptualize the embroidery that goes into every outfit. Our Collection represents the finest in ethnic, haute couture for all tastes and occasions. Our custom designed and crafted pieces beautifully manifest the richness of Indian tradition and are balanced with contemporary style.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would not change a thing on the concept of design styles that I chose to pursue. However, if I had more resources available, I would have added a mainstream collection.
