Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Choi.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sean. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
At the ripe age of 6, my godfather placed a camera in my hand and told me to use up the entire roll of film. Ever since then, I haven’t been able to get away from it.
Since 2010, I’ve been fortunate enough to combine this passion with business by pursuing commissioned work. My flavor of photography has developed from weddings to commercial work to lifestyle/fashion.
However, my inspiration has always remained constant – creating images that evoke or inspire emotions deep within the viewer. The passion and the feeling made possible by imagery has been overcrowded by today’s latest trends and fads.
I enjoy reminiscing and studying the work of the classics such as Peter Lindbergh, Richard Avedon, and Annie Leibovitz.
As an ambitious photographer, certified thinker, and fellow human, I wish to share stories that stir curiosity, and welcome empathy of life experiences through the camera lens.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wouldn’t have been a journey if there weren’t some obstacles or trials – anything from breaking cameras to learning about the legalities of business the hard way. The ultimate challenge but hidden blessing is not getting too comfortable or content.
I constantly find and learn from mistakes in order to push myself to shoot better. I often look at photos taken 3-6 months ago with different eyes and question why I made the decisions that I did. I’ve gotten to experience a variety of pains but they simply refine the committed shooter.
Sean Choi Photo – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am currently focused on lifestyle and fashion photography but have a strong background in wedding and commercial photography.
What sets me apart is my understanding of functional photography, human anatomy, and interpersonal communication. So much goes into being a photographer and thousands of decisions need to be made. You can be a technical nut but if you’re subject isn’t comfortable or is inexperienced with their body movement, you’re still losing – the same vice versa.
I’ve studied my ass off learning the intricacies of light photons to dorsal aesthetic lines to cracking dad jokes. This ensures that I do my part as the photographer and it results in a more creative/collaborative effort with my subject.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One of my proudest moments has been a recent trip to Vegas in which I was able to see my published work plastered all around the MGM Grand on The Strip, Top Golf, and other retail stores for a commissioned shoot for a brand.
That same brand was also a vendor at an exposition in Asia recently that my biological father was also booting at and was actually able to see my work halfway across the globe. It was a remarkably earnest and fulfilling sensation.
