Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Jackiewicz.
Scott, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
PI have been in the grocery business nearly all my life. My first job was delivering groceries in the North End for a small market called Larry’s Food back in the late 70s. The store is now occupied by La Famiglia Restaurant. Most of the old store fronts in the north end are eateries now. I refer to the old neighborhood as Italian Disneyland. I managed three Seven elevens in different neighborhoods of Boston but spent most my working life at the Charles Street location. In 2011 the store went private and became Charles Street Market. It quickly became one of the most successful independent markets and delis in Boston. Unfortunately the owner ran into some issues and the store had to close. People in the neighborhood still lament the loss of the shop. I finally decided to take the plunge and open a market of my own. The location at 570 Tremont became available and I took the plunge into small business ownership
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has had its fair share of obstacles. Staffing has been an issue but I feel most businesses are having the same problem now. Help wanted signs are plentiful in the neighborhood. It has also been a challenge to get people back into their old habit of stopping by the market because it was closed for over 18 months when the previous owner unexpectedly died. Another issue is getting former customers to realize we are not a carbon copy of the old market
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Muscarella’s Market – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Muscarella’s Market strives to be the friendliest, most efficient shop in the neighborhood. We tend to know are customers by name and what they want before they ask for it. We specialize in delicious deli sandwiches, fresh salads, and fresh cut fruit smoothies, Muscarella’s also provides groceries, snacks, drinks and sundries for the Union Park Neighborhood. Our motto is “What you want. What you need,” We are open everyday from 7am to 9pm and I can proudly say despite any storms or other obstacles we are ALWAYS open for are posted hours
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I think one needs to listen to the customer and adapt as needed. I also feel as a business owner one needs to value each customer walking through the door.
