Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Alderson.
Scott, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey begins back in my 20’s when I was waiting tables. My right arm started to go numb and I didn’t know what to do about it. A friend at work recommended I see her chiropractor. I’m not sure I even knew what a chiropractor was at that point. His name was Dr. Guy and what he explained made sense. He did a great job and my arm got better. A few years later I found myself looking for better career options. I had a strong tendency towards natural health care and admired my chiropractor. I decided to go back to school and complete my undergraduate work. From there I applied to and eventually graduated with honors from the University of Bridgeport with a doctorate in chiropractic. During my time there I spent a lot of my free time studying with chiropractors in private practice. After graduation, I got married and we decided to relocate to the seacoast area of New Hampshire.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Even with all the extracurricular work, I had zero business sense in this new field. I thought that just be honest, do your best for people and the practice would build itself. I had no clue that a lot of people didn’t respect the profession and also no marketing experience. I got a lot of bad advice along the way. I spent a lot of money on advertising that didn’t produce results. Eventually, lesson are learned and you find the right support. Perhaps though, the biggest hurdle came 8 years ago. I was having digestive issues that weren’t resolving.
Eventually, I succumbed to my wife’s wishes and had a colonoscopy. The results were colon cancer. Right then, in that conference, we decided to close the practice and schedule the surgery. Seven days later, I had to say goodbye to my 3-year-old daughter as I left the hospital. By far the toughest thing I have ever done. The surgery went reasonably well but a little more complicated than they thought. The further testing on the lymph nodes came back clean with no signs of metastasis. I walked out of the hospital at 128 lbs. Three weeks later I reopened the practice and went to work on salvaging the business. The one thing that has been there regardless has been my wife and daughter. They are my rocks.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Scott Family Chiropractic – what should we know?
Most chiropractors set out to help people with their aches and pains by working on muscle spasms, increasing the range of motion and other techniques. There are many good ones to choose from. In my office, I focus on an area of chiropractic called Structural Correction. So let’s say you were looking at a bridge with bent guard rails, cracked road, and potholes. You could call the road crew in to fix those issues. To me, I’d approach it more like a structural engineer. I want to make sure the footings are solid, the I-beams aren’t rusting out, the concrete isn’t cracking, etc. If the bridge is unsound structurally, then the surface repairs would be nothing more than a patch job.
Similarly, when I examine the human frame and spine, I am looking at the structural integrity. If there are shifts in the spine then the integrity will be compromised. This will lead to secondary problems that most people call symptoms. My work is designed to restore the structure which reduces and eliminates the secondary problems but also works to prevent future breakdowns.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Success is so multi-faceted, I’d have to go with honesty, not just with others but with yourself.
