Meet Sarah Narcus of Without A Hitch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Narcus.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Without A Hitch was launched in 2013. I had been planning fundraising and community events for more than ten years, and simultaneously has always been a bit wedding obsessed. I reached a point where friends were getting married, and I saw a niche market, a need that wasn’t being filled: a reasonably-priced, highly-competent wedding coordinator solely focused on day-of services.

I resisted the idea for a while (I already had a full-time job! And I was in graduate school! And there were lots of wedding planning companies in Boston!), until I came up with the company name. The next day, I had built the website and social media profiles, and Without A Hitch was born and the team continues to grow.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning and operating a small business is never a smooth road, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth every effort.

When I coordinated our first wedding 5 years ago, I had never coordinated a wedding before. I hadn’t even been a guest a wedding in nearly ten years. It was a steep learning curve, but the result (150+ weddings and five years later) is an incredible wealth of knowledge and connections that we offer as value to our clients.

Being a small business owner in the wedding world means sacrificing nights and weekends and holidays. It’s a lot of time in the car, on the phone, meeting at coffee shops. There are lots of emotions, expectations, and details.

Every day is challenging and every event we work on is different. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Without A Hitch – what should we know?
Without A Hitch was founded on the idea that couples should be able to enjoy their wedding day without worrying about all of the details. While there are many great organizations doing wedding and event planning, Without A Hitch focuses on what we do best: day-of coordination. It is the only service that we offer and (we think) we do it the best in the biz.

Without A Hitch is a small organization with a personal touch. Our clients love the intimate size of our staff; you will recognize us at your event. Because of this, we get to know clients on a personal level through check-up emails, meetings, and calls, and clients feel comfortable reaching out to us on a regular basis and during events for any issue or question.

We also have professional connections with many Boston-area vendors, so chances are we know the client’s caterer or DJ, ensuring a smooth event.

And most importantly, we understand that each of our clients has worked hard to plan their event, so we work just as hard to make sure their vision and plans are carried out on the day of the event.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I have never claimed that I’m a visionary designer or that I have a brilliant design sense. These are special skills that a lot of folks in the wedding world (and a lot of our clients) have.

Instead, I credit any success that we have to the hard work of communication. From the start, I am clear and prompt with prospective clients about what is and what is not included in our service. When a client opts to work with us, we set up an in-person meeting right away to get to know each other, which paves the way for better remote communication moving forward.

We spend a lot of time interpreting and understanding clients’ plans so that we are ready to execute when it’s time. And on the day of an event, we approach communication with every other vendor from a team perspective.

We are all there with the same mission: to execute the plans on behalf of the clients’ mission. With that in mind, we are all in it together with inevitably leads to more success and a better experience all around.
