Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah McManus.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I actually started my career in fashion and writing. I dabbled in pet fashion with a line of dog bandanas a few years back. I always wanted to own my own shop or business and made a cake for my brother’s dog on his birthday. It was a huge hit and my Mom looked over and said, “I got it.” I went home and started working on DOG EAT CAKE that night. I began creating the branding and the basis for what I wanted the aesthetic to look like. I love that part of a business. It’s been so exciting and I can’t wait to branch out more.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, I have been so lucky to have people respond well and really like what we do. I’m fortunate to be in a neighborhood filled with so many dogs and people who love them like family. The South End is my home and the neighborhood has been so supportive and welcoming to DOG EAT CAKE.
Challenges can come being self-employed and figuring out the ways of running a business, but I welcome them and can’t wait to learn more.
Please tell us about DOG EAT CAKE.
DOG EAT CAKE is an online boutique pet bakery featuring all natural ingredients. We are based in the South End, but we can also ship our products. We love the personalization and creating something unique for our beloved animals. We specialize in celebration and birthday cakes.
People love to celebrate their dog or cat’s birthdays and the cakes are the most fun to do. I think the added touch of a name or saying is what sets us apart.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I used to make fresh pasta with my Papa growing up. He was always there to show me the ropes in the kitchen. I have his pasta machine now (he passed a couple years ago) and what I wouldn’t give to make another batch with him.
