Meet Sarah Clifford of ALOA Skincare in Plymouth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Clifford.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
To make a long story somewhat short, I have undertaken this new venture based on my belief that the products people use on their skin should be safe, clean and as natural as possible for the health of their skin and overall being.

As a fitness junkie and co-founder of YourGymGF, an online fitness community, I’m just as passionate about nourishing my body from the outside in! I was always known to use clean products on my skin, and when people kept asking me what I was using, I decided to start ALOA- a new company offering a line of organic skincare products. I want this to become a lifecycle brand that not only represents nourishing your body by eating clean but also nourishing your body from the outside and what you put on it.

When tragedy struck and I lost my brother in a car accident in 2011 at the age of 25, I turned to health and fitness to help get through the hard times and keep my head above water. I took motivation from positive people around me to keep a positive mindset.

A year later, my mother was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and had to go through intense chemotherapy and radiation treatments. While she was also into fitness and is doing great now, I believe the stress of losing her son impacted her health tremendously.

Both experiences caused me to re-evaluate my life and realize that life is short. I decided from then on I would make a pact with myself to venture life my way – while also making an impact on others.

Those events made me want to share fitness, nutrition, ways of taking care of yourself, but also to do things I really enjoy doing in life that make me happy but also in turn help other people at the same time.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing is smooth road and there are new obstacles every single day. Starting a new business is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I have a new found respect for other entrepreneurs! I would say the biggest struggle is sleeping. The work is never over and starting a new business is like having a business baby…it needs you constant attention! I’ve promised myself to focus on getting more rest as health is the number priority of course!

ALOA was started with the belief that skincare should be safe, clean and as natural as possible. When was the last time you read the ingredients on your skincare products? How many of those ingredients could pronounce? Do you know where they came from? Well, a majority of them come from crude oil. Would you knowingly apply crude oil to your skin with the hope it will make your skin beautiful? Think of it this way, when it comes to food, “you are what you eat”. If we plaster our skin with harsh chemicals where do they go? That’s right, we absorb them through or skin thinking there are no long term side effects. Many of these ingredients are banned in Europe. All of these chemicals contribute something called “toxic load”. It’s a measure of the amount and type of toxic chemicals in our bodies that come from our air, food, water and the environment. The effects of “toxic load” on humans are well documented. When it comes to skincare, just because these harsh chemicals didn’t show harm in a 30 day animal study doesn’t mean there aren’t long term consequences.
