Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Buckwalter.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been a Professional Organizer for over 17 years. I started my career off with a degree in Journalism and French and for a few years after college I worked in various roles; marketing, web design, office management, etc.
In December of 1999 I was at the mall shopping for holiday gifts. While wandering around one of the stores, a book caught my eye. It was sitting on the end-cap of an aisle all by itself and for a reason I can’t remember, I felt compelled to buy it. That book was Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui by Karen Kingston. I went home and read it and was inspired! I didn’t know that organizing was a career. This is exactly what I wanted to do! I called my friend and said “I’m going to be a Professional Organizer.” He replied with “what is that?”
At that time, I was working for a growing company with shrinking space. I worked in a small cube and they literally kept moving the walls closer together to make room for more cubes in the space! I also had all of the marketing materials for the company stored in boxes in my cube.
My first organizing project was to go to Home Depot, buy one of these metal shelving units and assemble it. The only available space for shelves was in the women’s bathroom! So, there I was, on the floor of the women’s bathroom, putting together my first shelving unit. Everyone thought I was nuts! I moved all of the marketing materials out of my cube, onto these shelves, organized them and labeled them. Once I got those out of my cube I went to work on my files and office supplies. I whipped my cube into shape and it felt great! The downside of this was that my desk was always so clear after that, I was accused of not having enough work to do by my co-workers! Oh well, you can’t win ‘em all.
Motivated to organize other people beyond my own office space, I founded Organizing Boston in 2000. Since then, Organizing Boston has grown into the largest professional organizing business in New England and was the winner of the coveted award of Best of Boston Home™, Best Professional Organizer.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first struggle in starting this business was educating the world as to what a professional organizer does. People still don’t understand the nature of this service.
Of course, being an entrepreneur and small business owner has its challenges. Exceptional customer service has always been my motto and it’s been a challenge to find the right team of employees to follow this.
