Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuil Palchevskiy.
Samuil, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started the business the beginning of summer 2017. I had the idea towards the end of the spring semester. I was about to finish my junior year of college down in Florida, and go back to my home in NH to work and try to make some money for the next school year over the summer. I didn’t want to work in a factory or fast-food place again. I wanted to do something different that summer. I wanted to be outside; not stuck inside somewhere, standing in the same spot eight hours a day. My roommate told me about how he and his brother do landscaping as their means of earning money. I thought, “Why can’t I do that?”
So I started planning. I was still finishing up the semester when I put together a website, started a Facebook page, and bought some equipment on Amazon with my credit card. I talked with a couple other college students who also did landscaping over the summer and got some valuable advice. When I came back home after the end of the semester, my equipment was just coming in. It wasn’t much – just a push mower, string trimmer, blower, and a couple gas cans – but it was enough for me. Next order of business; I began trying to spread the word. I walked up and down streets putting out door hangers, I started a professional Home Advisor account, and later a Thumbtack account. In a couple weeks, the calls started coming in. I would fold up the seats in the back of my little Honda Element, pack in all the equipment I had, head over to the customer’s house, give a quote, and start mowing. And just like that, the work started building up, and I was busy all summer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The first challenge was just starting. Buying the equipment I would need and not knowing if I would pay it off was an uneasy feeling for me. But I was ready to take the risk. I wanted to challenge myself. That debt served to fuel me to work harder to find customers and to do high quality work those customers would appreciate. Starting a business always involves risk, but you can’t let the fear of failure stop you.
The second challenge: It was hard work. I agreed to mow some lawns that were pretty big, when all I had was a push mower. Those lawns would take me a while, but I wasn’t afraid of the hard work. I pushed on, because I knew I needed it to help my business grow.
Third challenge; It became my life. It wasn’t anything like a regular job, where you show up, work your eight hours, and you’re done. Running the business all by myself, I had to do more than just the physical labor. I also had to take calls, set up appointment times for quotes, keep up with the scheduling, and keep in contact with all my regular customers.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sam’s Lawn Mowing – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Sam’s Lawn Mowing (as the name implies) mows lawns. We also pick up jobs for spring and fall clean up, trimming bushes, sodding and any other basic landscaping work. We are set apart from others, in that we take our time to do high quality work and to clean up after ourselves. I take pride in how much better a lawn looks after we’ve mowed and trimmed it.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I just hope to see the business grow: pick up more regular clients every summer, get more equipment and better equipment, hire workers, and just expand. Just the fact, that a simple idea, that I put my mind to, become a reality is joy enough for me. To see something I started grow and become a large, self-sustaining company that produces high quality work everyone in the surrounding neighborhoods turns to would give me great satisfaction.
