Today we’d like to introduce you to Samara Mitchell Da Silva.
Samara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, chronic homelessness was something I saw often and was too familiar with. So much so that when it happened in my family I didn’t even notice. I knew then that in order for the cycle to not repeat I had to become the change I wanted to see… and I did. It wasn’t until my Junior year of College that I began to reflect on my life ‘s experiences that everything came to a head.
My elders were always telling me growing up that, “if you don’t own your own you won’t have your own” this stuck with me until this day. I knew that this was only part of it and without financial education, we wouldn’t have the tools necessary to “own our own”. So I sought out information. I was fortunate enough to have resources; not only guide me and fill in the gaps but most importantly answer the questions I did not think to ask.
I met my mentor when I was 19 years old and over the next decade, they continuously tested my drive but most importantly my resolve. I focused on the education in and around the “real estate transaction”. I strive to be the destination. My clients respect and trust me, this is what I take pride in. Even though they don’t know my herstory I make it a point to help them turn the keys of their next story in life.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I could say its been smooth but I’d definitely be lying. This industry is not forgiving. Contrary to what you see on TV this business is pretty intense, to say the least. Misogyny is in your face and even though you see more women now it’s still a boys club. Being a woman of color I am often second-guessed as if to verify my competence which is infuriating.
I have been in meetings and network events where I am a guest and they think I am the help, while in 100% business attire. I was even told by a member of my team “you’re going to wear that on your head to meet new clients?” He was referring to my headwrap which I had to let him know is part of my identity! Perception is 95% of the business to your everyday person and because I chose to be authentic I felt like an outsider. I strive to be only myself and I do that unapologetically. People can see fake and that’s something I refuse to be.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career was helping my sister purchase her first house. I cried before she even got her keys lol. But seriously, it was truly the proudest moment of my career.
