Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Yanofsky.
Samantha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started being interested in photography when I was 9 years old at overnight camp. Once I stepped foot in the darkroom I got hooked. From that day forward I studied photography in all the educational areas I could. I would always have a camera with me everywhere I went, and had my own dark room at home to develop all my film, I took photo in high school, I double majored in Photojournalism and Art Photography in college and even took summer classes in London. When I graduated college, I moved to Los Angeles and worked under a wedding photographer, as well as, the Lucie Awards, which are the academy awards for photography. After a year in LA, I moved back to Boston and officially started SLY Photography.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been extremely lucky with my business. Since I moved back to my home town, everyone who knew me knew of my passion for photography and started calling me when they needed photos. My main struggles were just starting my business from the bottom and learning the ins and outs of owning your own business.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SLY Photography – what should we know?
My main focus has been on Bar Mitzvahs, Weddings, portraits, and family sittings. But, I really do anything people need. I do a lot of corporate and non-profit events, real estate, sports, concerts, animals, products, newborns, etc.
I am extremely proud of my work ethic and the relationships that I build with my clients. I understand that people don’t always enjoy getting their photos taken, so I try to make the experience as fun and painless as possible.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My parents. Never once did they try to take me off this path. They saw my passion from day one and believed in me. Not only did they help me further my education, but once they saw how invested I was in the art (at age 14), they built me a darkroom in our home so that I would be able to develop my film whenever I wanted.
