Meet Robert Swanbeck of BGS Environmental Services in Quincy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Swanbeck.

Robert, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Back in 1987 I started working at a company that removed silver from the x-ray and printing industry’s developing fluid. I worked my way up from a fork lift driver to the plant manager over 15 years. The company was eventually bought out by a larger environmental company that wanted to get into our line of work, after a few years all the x-ray and photography/printing industry started going digital, meaning no developing fluid to remove the silver from and they started too laid off some of the people from those companies that they bought.

After being out of work for a few months I was offered and took a job in the asbestos and mold removal business, starting at the bottom as a worker and working my way up to a sales person/operation manager. After working there for 10 years there was an owner change and things started going in a direction I wasn’t comfortable with. So myself and my significant other decided to go out and start our own asbestos and mold removal company. After 2 years we started to get busier with mold removal jobs, so we decided to stop doing the asbestos removal and focus all our attention on mold removal that was 3 years ago and we are still here going strong.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The first couple of years things were pretty tight financially, especially being an owner operated company with all the larger franchise companies to compete against, then as our name started to get out there as one of the mold remediation companies that really cared about our customers, did meticulous work and always doing the extra little things that make a big difference to the customers things started to pick up.

Please tell us about BGS Environmental Services.
We specialize in mold removal, select interior demolition (Clean with air scrubbers and containments) and installing Humidex ventilation systems. We are known for doing excellent work, always willing to do the little extras that make a big difference. Customers also like that I am the one that will be looking at the job for their free estimate and I will also be the person that will be doing the job.

I am very proud of the positive reviews we have gotten, because that tells me that we are doing our jobs right, in such a way that people are willing to take time out of there day to write the reviews.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
The one thing I would have done differently is to start the company as strictly a mold removal and interior demolition company and not as an asbestos removal and mold company.

I believe if we did that we would have been further along in our reputation as one of the best mold removal /interior demolition companies.
