Meet Robert Michelson of Photography By Michelson in South Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Michelson.

Robert, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career as a photographer while still in high school, and had my first photograph published in the Brockton Enterprise in 1973. Since that time I have photographed and/or videotaped over 2000 events including weddings, bar/bat-mitzvahs, corporate events, reunions and portraits.

In addition to my passion of telling people stories with my camera I pursued a second passion of underwater photography and video, becoming a certified SCUBA diver in 1979, followed by Dive Master, and Specialty Instructor ratings in the early 1980’s. My goal was to become the “Jacque Cousteau of New England”.

My photography/stories and videos have been published in numerous regional and national magazines and on most broadcast cable and television network outlets in the United States. Credits include: National Geographic, Field & Stream, Highlights for Children, Nature Friend, Aquaculture, Skindiver, Rodale’s SCUBA Diving, Montana Outdoors, Texas Fish & Game, New Hampshire Wildlife Journal magazines, as well in many local daily and weekly newspapers.

Broadcast footage and programming have been aired on PBS, NBC, CBS, Fox, CNN, Science Channel, History Channel, and the Discovery Channel.

There are currently 2 feature documentaries in production – one titled “Project Mishoon”, follows the story of early Native American dugout canoes being discovered intact on the bottom of Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA. The goal is to recover one of 3 craft, restore the vessel and display as part of a lake-side museum with the Nipmuc Peoples.

The second program’s working title “The Minot Light Gale”, follows the construction of the first spindle-legged lighthouse that was lost to the sea with the loss of both lighthouse keepers during the “perfect storm” of 1851. Divers discovered the remains of that structure in 30-40 feet of water in 2007. The objective while working with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is to create the first underwater state park in this region.

Has it been a smooth road?
In the early days, many people of authority did not think acquiring quality underwater photography and video of several species of threatened fish were possible due to the conditions in which they were found, only to have a feature documentary debut on one of PBS’s anchor stations, WGBH-TV, Boston in 1992. This program “Return From The Sea…The Restoration of Atlantic Salmon To New England” was subsequently distributed to affiliate PBS stations across the Northeastern United States, and later was broadcast by “Assignment Discovery”, reaching approximately 50 million households throughout the United States.

Scientists and administrators stopped challenging my abilities once this program first made its’ debut. My message is if anyone tells you that you cannot do something, find a way to prove them wrong and do not stop, regardless as to the obstacles!
