Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Pavadore.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Richard. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started working at Raytheon as a microwave Engineer. Most work in this field is north of Boston and I was brought up on the south shore. I started the business as a consulting engineer so that I could work from an office closer to home while still supporting the industry. With the advent of cell phones, fax, and UPS /Fed-Ex shipping it was fairly easy to work from a more suitable location while still doing the job that I enjoyed.
I started working at my own business in 1989 and have been working here and growing since then. We now have a small but very state of the art engineering test and design lab located in East Bridgewater, MA with over 3000 square feet. Our lab has more equipment, fixtures, setups, technology and test facilities than many of our much larger customers. We provide design, engineering, and testing support for the microwave and high frequency industries across the US and world.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Generally, it was a fairly smooth transition from an employee to where we are today. Being and engineer, I am somewhat conservative, so my growth although slower than probably a business background would like.
I purchased equipment as we needed and could afford it, slowly adding to our capabilities and space going from my home basement, then to a small outside office building, and finally to our current location. Which includes ample office space as well as a test lab.
I worked with many companies supporting them with the knowledge and facilities I had and slowly grew to a fully operational and technical laboratory where we can now do most any test required by our customer base and beyond.
Please tell us about Engineering Specialties Service.
Our business is primarily in the microwave and high frequency field. This work involves us designing and making components for companies using radar systems, and various high frequency communications companies, Our industries go from government to medical and private commercial industries.
Our product line is mostly passive microwave components including but not limited to microwave absorbers, couplers, terminations, and ferrite devices. In addition to the components that we make and design, we also provide testing services for many other components due to our extensive lab and equipment. Many companies we work with do not have the expertise or equipment to test, verify or qualify their products for market. We support them by helping with the design and providing an outside test lab at a lower cost than if they had to purchase all the necessary equipment.
We are most proud of our every expanding in house capabilities that offer unique testing and evaluation services that in many cases, we are told that we are the only one (or one of very few) companies offering our services. Many of our customers have expressed their gratitude and relief when finding us and learning that we can help solve their test or design issues. We are a very specialized, niche company offering very unique services and willing to do extraordinary setups and testing that most companies cannot or will not do. Being relatively small allows us to zero in on each customers application providing them with individual attention to detail.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I were to start over today, I may put a bit more emphasis on a production product line since I have found that although I get tremendous satisfaction working and solving engineering problems that the production component of a business can bring in higher revenues to allow more growth. It also allows the company to add more employees of differing backgrounds and education levels to do the different tasks required. Being strictly engineering keeps me at the end of the technical funnel for many of the day to day activities and processes.
