Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Hawke.
Richard is a video specialist with twelve years’ professional experience and twenty years personal experience as videographer and photographer.
Richard was born in England and moved to the U.S. in 1993 gaining dual citizenship in 2004. He now works collaboratively with clients across North America, The U.K., and Europe. At thirteen he started making short films, trading a box of Magic Cards for a video camera and VTR (that only shot in grayscale/ sometimes green). With his friends, he started experimenting, from then on it became his passion.
Received a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Hofstra University; where he focused on visual arts, humanities, and anthropology. He then began assisting for photographers, designers, and videographers and was very fortunate to work with and learn from many talented creatives. This apprenticeship is where he learned everything from how to take a good photograph to how to communicate and collaborate with clients.
Over the past six years, he has developed a strong network of filmmakers and creatives in the Greater Boston Area, providing a quickly scalable production team. He started Hawke Commercial Filmmaking in 2012, and two years later he partnered with an audio production company building a sound studio in Somerville (now in Charlestown).
Hawke Commercial Filmmaking produces not only commercial work but also short narratives and feature documentaries.
Richard is also an instructor CCTV in Cambridge Massachusetts and is the photo and video producer at Starlab Studios.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always obstacles but all can be overcome. Some of the largest ones were: working capital, learning how to run a business (being a creative it required a lot of research), and keeping the company focused (not trying to do everything).
