Meet Reneiry Santiago

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reneiry Santiago.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I used to write a lot. I used to write poetry, stories, and keep journals of my everyday life. I eventually spiraled into depression and anxiety and lost interest in what I loved the most. When I was finally able to pick up a camera, I started writing stories again but through my lens. I’ve always had an interest for photography but it wasn’t til 2015, that I realized it was my passion and a way to send out messages to those around me.

Please tell us about your art.
I am a photographer. I document my everyday life, featuring those around me and I feature those around me to send out messages. I don’t care if others think they are contradictive. I want my peers to know my photos are real and I want them to relate. If they can’t relate, at least understand.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think the conditions are hard. Artists are no longer appreciated like they used to be. Funding is getting cut from art programs. We live in an era where technology is everything and people forget that art is not just painting and drawing. It’s architecture, fashion, furniture design, etc. Art is also a form of communication and therapy. Though, the conditions are hard, platforms/organizations like you guys, the Boston Voyager, Girl Magic Meets, Siirart, etc. are a big help. I think cities should form more organizations that can help artists get recognized and help their voices be heard. In a world, where artists are exploited, the slightest support keeps an artist going.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
From time to time, I get featured in exhibitions or host one of my own. Currently, my early work is permanently featured in a photo mural at Northern Essex Community College. I post my work on Instagram and I have an e-portfolio.
