Meet Randy Berenson of City Pump & Motor Service in Cambridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Berenson.

Randy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been employed in this industry for over forty years. My career started at Reliance Electric Company. Reliance was a manufacturer of equipment and was one of the leading sources of motors and related equipment worldwide. They had never been in the service end of the business. Reliance decided to build over twenty service centers across the United States and the first one would be in Boston. I worked with them to achieve the Boston shop and spent eleven years with them as a sales engineer.

My career took a turn and I joined a company in Cambridge who was an independent service center, much like I am today. They specialized in Pumps. I spent eleven years with these folks as well. My roll once again was sales engineer.

In 1998 they decided that it was time to move out of the business. I asked a few of the key personal to join me in forming what is now City Pump & Motor Service. With my sales experience and their technical skills we built our business over the last nineteen years. My team is my success. Today we employ a team of seven experienced people as well as family members who are driven by our unique abilities and capabilities, always putting the customer first. I am very proud of each and every one of them.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the early days we struggled to get name recognition. We were very fortunate that my prior years of dealing with many different kinds of customers allowed us an opportunity to work with these folks I had known for years. This is a personal business. People trust you. You need to be there for them when there equipment needs an emergency fix as well as every day. We have taken the learning experiences of previous employment and honed them to the needs of our customers. We listened to the needs of the customers and today we enjoy a good market share. This is a tribute to our personnel as well as our customers. We are a team.

Please tell us about City Pump & Motor Service, Inc.
On any given day, people ask me “what do you do”. I explain that we are a behind the scenes company. Many things occur in a building behind the walls. We are moving water, air and sewage to keep the building functioning. This may be a manufacturing plant, office building, HVAC/Mechanical Contractor, college, railroad, pharmaceutical facility or retail establishment. Pumps and electric motors do this work. We specialize in removing the customer’s equipment from the facility, repairing it and re-installing it to like new condition. In many cases saving the customer thousands of dollars in replacement costs. Our state of the art facility rewinds electric motors, has a complete machine shop and the equipment to support the needed repairs. We also sell new equipment as well.

We are a one stop service center with our shop and personnel centrally located to our customer base in Boston and Cambridge as well as a twenty mile radius of our shop. Our people are trained in many facets of our business. We are perpetuating this business into the next generation to provide our customers with services for many years to come.
I think what sets us apart from others is our ability to perform and meet the needs of our customers challenges. We offer 7/24 service, we provide detailed explanation of our work and offer alternatives, should the job present challenges. We are always there for our customers. They are our lifeline. We never loose site of that.

I am most proud of the company we have turned into. The customers drive us and we respond. Today we own our Cambridge facility with over 5000 sq. ft. to get the job in the door and out the door. Our equipment and parts we use are the best money can buy. We owe the best to our customers and we deliver.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in the City. I loved going to Fenway Park. I loved knowing where I was going. I could get around the city, like the back of my hand. Later in life that helped me to establish a customer base. I still love looking at the city skyline and admiring the changes we have seen in such a progressive city.
