Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramsey Alsarraf.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ramsey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We opened The Newbury Center in 2001, when I returned to Boston to become a faculty member at Harvard Medical School after completing my sub-specialty training in cosmetic facial plastic surgery. I originally fell in love with Boston as a student here at Harvard University and, though I left to go to Yale Medical School, knew that it was where I would want to found my practice. At the time, there were only two or three plastic surgeons on Newbury Street or in Boston’s Back Bay, despite its being a destination for beauty and fashion; today, there are a dozen practices offering everything from facial cosmetic surgery, to body plastic surgery, to non-invasive office procedures such as Botox and fillers. I like to think that The Newbury Center sets the standard for the best in facial cosmetic treatments, and that we have made Newbury Street the destination for these sorts of procedures, along with the other beauty treatments that the area has to offer. In the last 16 years, I have treated thousands of patients with both surgical and non-surgical procedures, and have become known as the top face/necklift surgeon in Boston, with the most natural and consistent results. Our patients come from not only Boston and the New England area, but from all over the country and, in fact, world– from New York to Hollywood to foreign dignitaries and even royalty. My patients get the best of both worlds– the security and comfort of having their surgery in the Harvard hospital system at Mass Eye & Ear Infirmary, with the elegance and discretion of having the rest of their care at our boutique office on Newbury Street.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For me, the key to success has been specializing exclusively in cosmetic surgery of the face and neck– and refusing to spread myself too thin by doing body plastic surgery or even extensive skin treatments. Because of this narrow focus, we have been able to avoid many of the pitfalls or struggles that other practices encounter. No patient wants a doctor who specializes in breast surgery or skin treatments dabbling in their face and yet, in Boston, surgeons who try to do everything are very easy to find. My focus has always been the four procedures that I do day in, day out, year after year– the face/necklift, eyelid surgery, browlift, and rhinoplasty. By maintaining this focus, my results are more consistent, and patients are simply happier. A good example of this is how many patient referrals we get from the myriad of hair salons on Newbury Street and around Boston– your hairdresser sees the good, the bad, and the ugly, and they often know best whose incisions leave the smallest scars, and which surgeons truly are facial specialists. Every week I will see a patient who says that their hairdresser told them “not to go to Dr. X because he specializes in breast work” or “not to go to Dr. Y because her patients often need to have revision surgeries”– hair dressers are a great resource for all things beauty, and it is no different with cosmetic surgery.
The Newbury Center for Cosmetic Facial Plastic Surgery – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Again, as Boston’s premier boutique office for cosmetic facial plastic surgery, The Newbury Center has the reputation of being where to go if you want the best facelift, necklift, rhinoplasty, or eyelift in New England. What sets us apart is not only our personalized upscale service, and our sole focus on cosmetic surgery of the face, but also the individual technical procedures that I specialize in. For example, my face or neck lift not only tightens the skin and smooths out wrinkles, but also resuspends the deeper fat and muscle of the face, which offers patients more natural and longer lasting results. I am proud of the fact that we have been able to maintain this specialized focus over the last two decades, and not succumb to every new office treatment or whim. Unlike many other practices in Boston, I do not dabble in body work or push extensive skin care treatments– I leave those things to the body plastic surgeons or dermatologists in town, simply because it is their area of expertise, whereas mine is the face. When a dermatologist or referring physician sends me a patient, they do so knowing that I will treat them with great care, and send them back to their practice looking rested, refreshed, and fabulous.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success in plastic surgery can only be defined as a happy patient. Surgically, this is achieved when I can strike the balance between a fabulous result that makes someone look ten years younger, rested, and refreshed, while still looking natural and unoperated-upon. Most people agree that ‘you get what you pay for’ in cosmetic plastic surgery and, though we may be more expensive than many other practices in Boston, our happy patients are a testimony to what skilled cosmetic facial surgery can achieve. You only have one face, and you don’t want to trust it to just anyone!
