Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Shoemaker.
Rachel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was younger I had always had a love of makeup. You could always catch me watching YouTube videos of makeup and reviewing products before I was even allowed to wear them. When I entered high school I always had my Bobbi Brown makeup guide on me and was frequently known as the girl who was obsessed with makeup. But I never wanted to do makeup or even considered a career in cosmetology for fear of being thought of as dumb. So I went on to college as a biology major and didn’t apply myself to my studies because every part of me was focused on always helping my friends with their hair and makeup. I realized while I was at school that beauty was my passion, it’s what I lived and breathed every single day. I left school after one semester and enrolled and completed esthetics school. I landed a job at my dream spa where I was let go a month later. I was defeated and had no interest in being in this field any longer but instead of giving up I decided to give a go at doing hair. It was love at first cut. Holding a pair of shears in my hands for the first time was so empowering, I finally felt at home. Two months into school I heard about an opportunity at a salon in Mansfield for an assistant so I sent in my resume and was added on to a team of the most incredible women I have ever met. They helped me bloom from a shy student to a confident stylist in just a few months.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This road was definitely not a smooth one for me. I went through a few very big struggles to decide that I wanted to do cosmetology, the biggest bump in the road was being let go from my dream job. I was struggling with social anxiety and wasn’t able to communicate with clients very well because of it. So I was told I wasn’t ever going to do well in a career in this field where you have to be bubbly all of the time. My heart and confidence was completely shattered. But the only way to fix a shattered heart is the rebuild it so that’s what I did. Cosmetology school was the glue that put me back together.
Please tell us about Hairaholic Salon.
The fun thing about being duel licensed in esthetics and cosmetology is I have knowledge in a bunch of different aspects of this beauty field. In my book of business I offer hair services both cut and color including balayage, air brush makeup, body and facial waxing, skin care and eyelash extensions.
My favorite part of the business would have to be our bridal and special event services. In my opinion there is nothing more special than being able to help a bride get ready for one of the most important days of her life.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory happened about 4 years ago when I was in high school. My immediate family decided to take my Nana to a Red Sox game, her first in many many years. My nana was one of the best parts of my life and the Red Sox were hers. She always used to sing take me out to the ball game with us whether it was over the phone, watching a game or just for the fun of it, and there was no feeling like getting to experience singing that with her during that game. It never fails to bring me to tears.
