Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Figueroa.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Priscilla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In Autumn of 2014, I was working as a Comptroller in Long Island, New York when the company I was then employed by sold the market I was overseeing. With my severance package in hand, I returned back to Massachusetts. Around the same time, my partner was searching for employment with an Insurance Agency. My partner, Dorcas Adorno is also my mother.
She was exhausted from the decades of working effortlessly for someone else. I had just experienced my first break up with Corporate America after a ten-year relationship that included a relocation in order to climb that corporate ladder.
We are all aware of a risks that are involved with starting a business. It can be scary to not have that safety net of a consistent 40 hours a week paycheck. Especially if that’s all you have known. I didn’t know much about the Insurance business however with my partner having over 20 years of experience in the Insurance business. I had over 10 years of experience in Business Management and Accounting, I trust my mother. I believed in her ability and she believed in mine. So, we took that gamble and it was the birth of People Insurance.
Has it been a smooth road?
The hardest part in starting in the Independent Insurance Agency was getting Appointed by an Insurance Company. What does it mean to get appointed by an Insurance Company? It means, getting permission to produce business for them. Insurance companies tend to give permissions/preference to agents with prior experience in the field.
Compatible to a freshly graduated College student entering the job market with a degree in hand but no job experience trying to patiently wait for an employer to give you that opportunity just so you can prove your ability. Getting appointed also requires time in order to prove to an Insurance carrier that you “the agency” would make a great candidate to produce business for that company. My partner having that 20 years of experience did afford us a shorter waiting period.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with People Insurance – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
People Insurance, is an Independent Insurance agency that caters to the everyday needs of individuals, families, and business who need and require Property and Casualty insurance. As an independent agency; People Insurance does produce for a multitude of carriers available in Massachusetts. The clients benefit the most by deciding which Insurance Company best suit their needs. Life is not a “one size fits all “and neither is an insurance policy.
Our customer service is what makes us stand out from the competitors. As a family business; we want our clients to feel like they are family members. Our customer service could be as small of a gesture as entertaining the client’s children while the transactions are occurring, completing the runner services for our clients because they have other obligations, and as grand as banking with Institutions that have branches open late evening hours or on Sunday because that might be the only day our clients has available. Life happens.
In the three years that People Insurance has been operating; the marketing and advertising has been mostly word of mouth. This speaks volumes on behalf the satisfaction from the clients in their with experience with our services and we are very proud of that. We are adding more lines of insurance as the company continues to grow to the bordering States.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Dorcas and I are Hispanic women in Business. We feel right at home to enjoy having our company based in Lawrence because it is one of the biggest Latin communities in Massachusetts. Fortunately, Lawrence also has a huge newly remodeled Register of Motor Vehicles just a few blocks away from the office. We are close to both 495 Highway and 93 Interstate. It’s central to the operations. Let’s not forget how amazingly delicious Spanish food is, as well!
My least favorite part about Lawrence is that the town is only four square miles. Which means; traffic can get hectic during commuting hours. It will take your 30 minutes to go one mile and trust me, on Fridays you want to avoid Broadway!
