Meet PJ Mercier of Navigation Brewing

Today we’d like to introduce you to PJ Mercier.

Thanks for sharing your story with us PJ. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We began our voyage 6 years ago. After 2 years of searching for a location, filing federal, state, and local permitting we found ourselves in a little garage bay on the outskirts of Lowell. It wasn’t long before we knew we had something people enjoyed drinking. A year later we moved into our current location at Western Ave Studios with the largest community of working artists in the US.

These days we are brewing 10-15 barrels a week and finding it difficult to keep up with demand. Our is currently the only location to purchase our beers. We like knowing that our patrons are able to enjoy the freshest beers possibly. It also allows us the ability to brew rotating options (over 100+ styles and varieties to date) with no end in sight.

Has it been a smooth road?
We can’t complain, our patrons love beer and have always been there to help clean us out. The only struggle we face is keeping up with demand. A problem we don’t mind having.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Navigation Brewing Co. story. Tell us more about the business.
Because we focus on freshness so we have the ability to constantly rotate our brewing schedule to push out beers that are not commonly brewed and inspired by seasons and mood, giving folks many different options. We also have something on tap for different palates. Some of our well-known beers are the Uncharted Series IPA’s, our Blonde Ale, Milk Stout, Double Porter, Winter warmer, Summer Ale, Pale Ale, IPA, Belgian Series, Coffee Porter, Black Pepper Porter, Kolsch, Pink Pepper Rye, RyePA, and Chocolate Oatmeal Stout. But with a vas variety, it’s tough to name more.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Think the big trend these days is visiting breweries with taprooms. People like fresh beer, different options and a relaxed Atmosphere to chill out with friends and family. Smaller breweries like ours seem to be the way to go. We won’t make the millions like the big guys but we never got into it to make a fortune, it was always about the love of beer and sharing that love with others.
