Today we’d like to introduce you to Piran and Ray.
Piran and Ray have been working together for over 34 years spanning multiple healthcare companies based here in the greater Boston area. In 2005, it was brought to their attention that traditional breast therapy methods were helping patients survive, but were falling short when it came to letting patients continue living their normal lives. The company, Advanced Radiation Therapy, was founded to provide new options for women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. A revolutionary new non-invasive radiation technology, called AccuBoost, was developed and the first patient was treated in 2007.
The non-invasive technology focusses on treating cancer while conserving the breast and retaining the breast’s original look and feel by targeting only the tissue in/around the site of the tumor. This is an approach commonly referred to as Breast Conservation Therapy (BCT). AccuBoost also minimizes radiation to the heart, lungs, and skin to reduce toxicity and potential long-term complications.
Has it been a smooth road?
For all medical device companies, it can be difficult introducing new technologies. Manufacturers undergo years of development and testing, generating data through clinical trials before FDA approval. Over the years, we have been fortunate to work with amazing people, including nationally recognized opinion leaders that have made the process very smooth.
Once you have introduced the product, generating a continuous stream of published clinical data is paramount to the success of any device. Being situated in the heart of healthcare innovation has given us an advantage working with institutions that focus on, and believe in, treatments that are best for the patient. With the various clinical publications and positive long-term clinical results, the company has seen an acceleration of the adoption of the technology.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the co-founders of the early stage breast cancer company: AccuBoost story. Tell us more about the business.
The AccuBoost team is dedicated exclusively to BCT. The company is staffed by scientists, engineers, caregivers and medical professionals who strive to deliver the best care possible for women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer including DCIS and LCIS.
What sets AccuBoost apart from other early-stage breast cancer treatments is our ability to deliver radiation non-invasively with real-time image guidance. This reduces unnecessary radiation exposure to the patients’ heart and lungs, healthy tissues, and skin.
AccuBoost has a strong national footprint with over 50 cancer centers throughout the country delivering the treatment. Among these partnerships, the company has strong collaborative relationships with local institutions publishing clinical data including Lahey Clinic, Brown University, and Rhode Island Hospital.
In July 2017, we celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the first patient treated with AccuBoost, a critical milestone for the company and any breast cancer survivor. We were privileged to talk to the patient and were thrilled to learn that she was able to attain the many milestones she had hoped to reach after her initial diagnosis.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Breast Cancer affects us all. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life. Each of us at AccuBoost has a friend, spouse or family member that has experienced breast cancer, so finding the best possible treatment is not just a profession for us.
