Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Powis.
Philip, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My background is in technology, I worked at Intuit for about 7 years in various parts of the business including care, sales, and product management out of the Cambridge office. Dr. Powis, my wife purchased Quincy Hearing just over three years ago and had been running the business by herself for the first year. I was looking to leave the corporate world and try my hand at entrepreneurial ventures, so decided to join her in the practice to see if I could help compliment her skill sets in my areas of expertise: marketing, business management, finance, etc.
After a year of doing so, I began to notice there were some distinct innovations in our practice that I felt compelled to share with the broader hearing industry and other practice owners.
I started a new company, Magnify the Solution, LLC to focus on digital strategy for the modern hearing practice. This business has been growing significantly, and last year I decided to expand into the retreat business. We’ll be hosting our first mastermind retreat in Costa Rica March 1st-5th with the goal of having 30 practice owners present.
The event is really focused on creating an immersive educational experience that brings hearing professionals together all in service of creating a bright future for the hearing industry and the communities we serve. Our event will stretch the limits of what our attendees believe to be possible and challenge them to think creatively about the way they approach opportunity.
The future is bright for the modern sustainable hearing practice!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can honestly say I’ve got an abundance problem 🙂 When I started Magnify The Solution and Hearing Experts Alliance, I wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested in hearing what I had to say. Now I’ve got more business than I can handle and am scrambling to hire a team of experts to support the work I’m doing on the digital strategy side. I’ve also started to expand my consulting work into some other fields such as integrative medicine, and health coaching.
Magnify The Solution is also assisting a few other businesses with how to support an online launch strategy for their retreat businesses. So, my biggest challenge right now that I’m focused on, or opportunity I should say is building the right team to expand the work I’m doing within the hearing industry community and beyond.
Hearing Experts Alliance – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
There are two parts here. On the digital strategy side, I help brick and mortar practice owners mostly in the hearing healthcare space to predictably and profitably acquire new business through online strategy and digital media. On the retreat and continuing education side, we are working to build a community of independent practice owners who are committed to out of the box thinking to forge a bright future for the physical practice and the patients we serve.
I’m most proud of the fact that I’m helping the small business owner stay relevant and competitive in an ever-changing digital landscape where there is tons of online competition and downward pricing pressure.
I think that what sets me apart is I “get it” – as a practice owner myself I’m in the trenches every week making sure we are delivering awesome patient experiences, and I know what its like to be in my client’s shoes. Any work I do for my clients has been tested an vetted within the four walls of our practice before I would recommend it to others. I’m not just some other marketer trying to sell Facebook ads!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My career has been a series of twists and turns. From working in the music industry to photography to software, and then more recently marketing and practice ownership, I think I’m most proud of the fact that I’m committed to living each day focused on bringing my best skills and passions into the world in a way that breeds positivity.
I think one of the proudest moments for me was simply taking the leap of faith to leave my well-paid corporate gig at Intuit and brave my way into startup mode. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been so worth it! I love getting up each day focused on new hard problems where no day is the same as the one before. I’m a creative out-of-the-box thinker who is dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and applying that to successful business outcomes.
