Meet Petrica Rosca of Data Recovery Guru in Boston’s Back Bay and Cambridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Petrica Rosca.

Petrica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story begins in Bucharest, at the time, a communist ruled Romania. I lived in Romania until I was 17 years old. I lived through the uprising and 1989 Romanian Revolution. I remember the day I was put on a train, with other boys my age and sent to the mountains to ensure we were safe during the uprising. My grandparents and father were oppressed by the communist regime; this led to my grandfather being granted an opportunity to come to the United States and start a new chapter in his life. My grandfather came to the US not being able to speak any English, but he had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. He opened a hot dog stand and worked day in and day out to support his family. I get my entrepreneurial drive, integrity and willingness to fight for what is right from him. Working side by side with my grandparents and parents have instilled in me mind and business independence. Once in a while when we were at lunch or dinner after an arduous day, my grandpa would say: “Hey listen: the best thing you can do in your life is to work for yourself!”

Through much sacrifice, my grandfather was able to bring my father to the US and my father was able to bring me. I didn’t know any English when I arrived. We moved to the melting pot of the world, New York City! It was a crash course in English and multiple cultures. Some days were easier than others, but I wouldn’t change one experience. A little under two years after arriving to the US, I graduated high school. My English still wasn’t great, but I had come a long way! I decided to go to college in upstate New York and major in Computer Science. My college experience was crucial in shaping the rest of my life. College life taught me independency, importance of staying true to my beliefs, humility, honesty and the criticality of being open minded. The experience of working as a doorman on Park Ave during summers and for a few months right after I graduated taught me the value of anticipating others’ needs and always treating customers with respect and compassion. All of these lessons shape the core values of Data Recovery Guru.

A few months after graduation, I landed my first and only technology industry job. I learned a lot as a Data Recovery Engineer, not only the technical expertise needed to be successful, but also effective communication skills needed for both internal and external clients. I worked at the data recovery company for over 7 years, and while I enjoyed my time with the company, I had this nagging feeling of being 100% in control of my destiny.

I always spoke of owning my own businesses, finally in 2015 the stars aligned and I took a leap of faith. I knew the process would be tough, but I also knew that my goals could be achieved. I read, read, read and read some more on everything needed to successfully open and maintain a business; I asked questions of entrepreneurs, attended workshops and went all in on opening Data Recovery Guru. Funny thing is, no matter how many questions you ask others or books you read, opening a business is a unique experience for each and every individual.

Building a client base in Massachusetts has been tough. There were other data recovery companies already established in the area. I had to come up with something that would set Data Recovery Guru apart. Going hand in hand with one of the core values of our company, we focused on providing the client a tailored white glove experience. We are headquartered in the Boston area and that sets us apart from most data recovery companies. Being headquartered in the area allows us to provide pick up and drop off service, onsite evaluations, and 24 hour availability. Through many calls and meetings we have been able to partner with various computer shops and IT professionals in the Greater Boston area; Word of mouth referrals have helped gain more clients and partnerships. Over the last two years business has increased and while we aren’t where we want to be, with hard work and dedication we will get there, allowing to expand and serve more customers.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Has it been a smooth road? That question makes me smile and take a moment to reflect every single time. The short answer is no, it hasn’t been a smooth road, but remember the roads less traveled are not finely paved. The main struggles have been getting clients, sacrificing personal or material items, and time with loved ones.

Various types of marketing strategies have been used to obtain clients. Some have worked well, some not so much, but it’s all about the process – learning, analyzing, adjusting and optimizing!

Although a ton of time is spent creating a business, most businesses don’t start out being uber profitable, so that means much sacrifice is made —not taking vacations or going out to fancy dinners, missing family functions, and not getting much sleep! However, if you are passionate about what you are doing, it will all be worth it in the long run, because passion is going to be what keeps you motivated!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a local advanced data recovery company specializing in file recovery from all Hard Disk Drives (HDD), Solid State Drives (SSD), External Drives, Compact, Micro and SD Cards Cards, NAS Storage Devices, RAID Arrays and virtual machines using Apple MacOS, Microsoft Windows, Linux based and other operating systems. The first step is to familiarize with the type of device our customer needs file recovery on and how it may have gotten damaged.

Our white glove data recovery service is what sets us apart from other companies. Being local allows us to provide in-lab, pick up and drop off convenience service, along with onsite service to residential, small businesses, corporations and government agencies in the Greater Boston Area. Although we collaborate with top data recovery engineers throughout the world for R&D purposes, we are big advocates for local business growth and support, therefore, we perform all recoveries in-house here in Massachusetts.

What were you like growing up?
I was an independent kid growing up. An only child that found ways to keep myself occupied, working next to my grandmother and hanging out with elderly folks while my parents were at work.

Growing up I thought I would be a professional basketball player. I loved the game as a child and still love it today (Go Knicks! And Celtics! Haha).

I spent many hours with my cousins and neighborhood friends. We got in a little bit of trouble, but nothing too bad, just the typical neighborhood corner stories trying a teenager out there in the streets. Being in the streets had helped developing a strong sense of “right-n-wrong”, social injustices and accountability.
