Meet Penny Meletlidis of I La Lu Design in Dracut

Today we’d like to introduce you to Penny Meletlidis.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After having worked in the corporate world for several years, I realized that my creative talents were constricted. I decided to run with my vision of starting my own graphic design business. I started off by freelancing for clients. Over time, with a little bit of advertising and lots of hard work, my business was booming. I started not only designing marketing materials and logos for businesses but also creating custom invitations for events. My creative juices flow more and more each day because of my clients’ vision. It’s been quite the journey!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, I’ve been very lucky and grateful. There were definitely lots of bumps along the way. As a sole proprietor, I had to teach myself how to price out jobs and make my time most valuable for the money I was trying to make. I had donated a lot of my design time in the beginning, but I knew I had to in order to grow and loved every minute of it.

Being a full-time business owner and a full-time mom & wife, sometimes finding that balance is difficult. I also don’t work side by side with anyone, so I have found that it takes a lot of will power for me to be diligent and to work on a strict schedule. On the flip side, working from home definitely has its obvious benefits (i.e. no more driving in traffic & rushing to work).

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the I La Lu Design story. Tell us more about the business.
I La Lu Design is a professional graphic design business that I started in 2011. I work with various types of clients, primarily for marketing/business collateral (i.e. logo design/corporate identity, brochures, flyers, direct mailers). I’m also known for my custom invitations which I design in both English and in Greek, especially for the large Greek population in the Boston area and throughout the country.

I work with each of my clients individually, making sure that the end result best suits his or her preferences and style. I absolutely love what I do and it shows in my work and in my relationships with my clients. There is no better feeling than bringing to life what my clients envision.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
First and foremost, I am beyond grateful for my husband, who believed in my vision and supported me from the very first day. We juggle our jobs and our family but we do it with passion and positive energy.

I feel lucky to live in a time where we have social media, such as Instagram or Facebook, as a good base for business growth. Being able to display some of my work for others to see has been beneficial.
