Meet Pauline Lord of White Gate Farm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pauline Lord.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since early childhood in CT, I have loved growing plants. As a college student in Palo Alto, I discovered “wellness” opportunities, including organic produce, yoga and so forth. With a BA from Stanford in Psychology and a Masters from Santa Clara University in Family Therapy, I became a psychotherapist, developing specialties in grief therapy and eating disorders. I stepped away from all that to raise our daughter, and, while doing so, ran a conservation group in the Bay Area called Committee for Green Foothills. When my husband retired from his career in volcano seismology, we moved to my mother’s farm in CT to reinvent ourselves as organic farmers. Since my mother’s death in 2014, I am turning her house and other buildings into lodging and venues for dinners, cooking classes, and yoga retreats. The popular farm stand is open Wednesdays and Saturdays until December 23. It re-opens in April.

Has it been a smooth road?
We knew almost zero about farming and made rafts of mistakes!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We raise organic produce, eggs, poultry and lamb and are known for our amazing farm stand where people purchase all of that plus pastries and other creations from our certified kitchen. We are known for the quality of our food and for our friendliness and genuine interest in customers learning how we grow our crops and raise our animals. We are just now opening the Inn at White Gate Farm with beautiful rooms, and hope that the farm will grow as a destination for agri-tourists.
